Western Mass Weather for January 15, 2020

[LIGHT SNOW ACCUMULATIONS NORTH OF THE PIKE LATE TONIGHT INTO TOMORROW MORNING] WITH MODERATE ACCUMULATIONS POSSIBLE IN THE HIGH TERRAIN OF SVT AND SWNH… WIND ADVISORIES HAVEEN HOISTED REGION-WIDE FOR BLUSTERY GUSTS TO 50MPH OUT OF THE NORTHWEST THURSDAY NIGHT INTO THE PRE-DAWN HOURS OF FRIDAY MORNING… COLD AND FAIR FRIDAY, WICKED COLD FRIDAY NIGHT, AND A MODERATE SNOWFALL FOR PARTS OF THE REGION SATURDAY LATER AFTERNOON AND EVENING BEFORE A CHANGE TO RAIN BEFORE IT QUITS SUNDAY MORNING… (5:55pm Wednesday)

Good evening everybody, we should know by now that Sunday evening through next week will see a reinforcing shot of cold air with winter returning and sitting on us for a bit. At least no storms are anticipated next week, not until the following weekend, at least.

Having said that, we’ve got two wintry systems (both of which will not be pure snowstorms) for early tomorrow morning, and again Saturday late afternoon into Sunday morning. Both will be producing accumulating snowfall in the region, with the first storm being less impactful than the second.

Is everybody in? The show is about to begin…

SUMMARY
–Clouds will increase tonight as a mid-level low tracks east into the eastern Great Lakes, spawning developing surface low pressure that will track east right through southern New England
–Lows will be in the upper 20s to low 30s tonight
–Snow will break out around or after midnight into the pre-dawn hours of Thursday morning
–Areas along and south of Route 2 should see snow changing to rain, or snow mixed with rain at times
–North of Rt. 2 we should see mostly snow
–It looks like a coating to an inch or so from the MA/CT border north to the Rt. 2 corridor should fall
–South of the MA/CT border, some scattered coatings are possible
–North of the Rt. 2 corridor in WMass and CMass up into SVT and SWNH, and including much of the Berkshires and western hilltowns, should see 1-3″
–A few higher terrain spots in SVT and SWNH could see 3-5″ of snow, particularly in the mountain peaks
–Snow quits before noon and after highs in the 35-40 degree range on Thursday, winds will start to howl, gusting 35-50mph tomorrow afternoon and night, with Wind Advisories hoisted region wide
–Lows will be in the single digits to low teens with wind chills below zero in spots!
–Friday is cold and fair, with winds lessening, and highs in the upper teens to low 20s with mostly sunny skies
–Lows crash into the single digits above AND below zero!
–This sets up a strong, thick cold surface atmosphere for warmer, moister air to ram into, and produce snowfall beginning in the mid to late afternoon, after an increasingly cloudy and cold (but dry) start on Saturday morning
–Snow continues Saturday night, then we have to see how much warm air makes it north, and how far north
–With a parent/primary low over Lake Ontario, and secondary low developing in the Gulf of Maine, we could see warm air push north to about Rt. 2, or the MA/VT border
–I don’t think there will be a wide area of ice with this, either snowing, or changing to rain
–For now, I am thinking a 2-5″ event south of Rt. 2 corridor, and 5-8″ north of there, with a few 10″ amounts in the high peaks of SVT/SWNH, but it’s still early, and refinements will likely be needed
–Any snow or rain exits by Sunday late morning, and after a day with highs well into the 30s, we will get cold into the teens Sunday night and then see highs in the 20s most of next week

Have a great night and stay tuned for updates! Thank you!

[SOUTHERN VT SNOW JACKPOT THRU SUNDAY] HEADS UP, SOUTHERN VERMONTERS, YOU’VE GOT SNOW COMING AFTER MIDNIGHT TONIGHT, AND AGAIN SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY MORNING… THE REST OF US IN THE WMASS REGION SEE ACCUMULATING SNOW CHANGING TO ICE AND RAIN DURING THAT SAME TIME PERIOD… WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES POSTED FOR SVT FOR LATE TONIGHT WEST OF BRATTLEBORO… WIND ADVISORIES LIKELY NEEDED FOR TOMORROW NIGHT AS COLD AIR RIPS INTO NEW ENGLAND ON STRONG NORTHWESTERLY WINDS… AFTER THE WEEKEND STORM, COLD AIR IS REINFORCED WITH MAINLY FAIR AND COLD CONDITIONS NEXT WEEK… (6:50am Wed)

Good morning everybody, The Bulletization Mobile(TM) kept we awake all night, beeping incessantly out my window, hollering at me that I’ve failed to mention its annoyingly loud presence in my life… it’s turning me into a punchy mess over here! Jane, stop this crazy thing!!!

SUMMARY
–Pick of the week is today, hooray!
–High pressure builds through to our south, bringing mostly sunny skies and highs in the low to mid 40s
–Low pressure will track east through southern/central VT tonight, which will increase clouds late at first
–Then, after midnight, snow will spread into the region north of the Route 2 corridor, with snow rain mix south of there
–The potential exists for northern CT to see mostly rain, but some could mix in there, too
–Lows will be in the low 30s
–Snow and rain will quit by late morning tomorrow
–In WMass, CMass, SVT and SWNH north of Route 2, we should see a coating to 2″ of snow, with 2-4″ in the higher terrain of SVT. Wouldn’t be surprised if Mt. Snow or Stratton got a half foot near the summit
–South of Route 2, some coatings are possible, maybe half inch to an inch in the western hilltowns or central/southern Berkshires and Taconics
–Snow/rain ships out by noon tomorrow with highs in the 30s, but then the cold front swings through, and the Canadian cold air mass unleashes into the region
–Wind Advisories will be likely tomorrow night into Friday morning with northwest winds gusting 35-50mph
–As the wind picks up, temps will plummet into the single digits to low teens, driving wind chills below zero by Friday morning early. Wind chill headlines may be needed in SVT/SWNH
–Friday is sunny but cold, with highs in the upper teens to low 20s, with winds slackening with time
–Lows will be in the single digits, near 0 degrees!
–On Saturday, clouds will increase in the morning as low pressure lifts northeast into the eastern Great Lakes
–Plenty of cold will be in place, so by mid/late afternoon we start off with accumulating snow
–However secondary low appears to form too late, and too far east to hold the cold in south of the VT/MA border
–Snow will change to ice and rain south of that line, with maybe 2-4″ on the ground before the change
–North of that line, SVT and SWNH see roughly 4-8″ with some sleet possibly mixing in, with up to 10″ toward central VT/NH
–Snow/ice/rain ends by Sunday noon, except for some snow showers in the Berkshires and southern Greens, with highs in the 30s and lows in the teens
–Much of next week looks cold and dry as Winter returns!

Have a great day!
