Western Mass Weather for January 12, 2020

[COOLER WEEK, WINTER STORM POSSIBLE SATURDAY] UNSETTLED CONDITIONS TUESDAY AFTERNOON/NIGHT AND WEDNESDAY NIGHT/THURSDAY MORNING WILL BE INTERSPERSED WITH FAIR BUT COOL WEATHER MORE IN LINE WITH THE MIDDLE OF JANUARY… THURSDAY NIGHT INTO FRIDAY LOOKS BRUTALLY BLUSTERY, AND THEN WE TURN TO A POTENTIAL SNOWSTORM FOR SATURDAY CAPABLE OF BRINGING THE PLOWS OUT IF THE ATMOSPHERIC STARS ALIGN… (7:20PM SUNDAY)

Good evening everybody, I hope you got out and enjoyed that record-breaking warmth we experienced today (and yesterday, for that matter).

It made the history books, and now it’s in the history bin.

After a more seasonable, and still fairly mild week for mid-January, the pattern is changing, and winter is returning.

In fact, a substantial snowstorm is possible for this coming Saturday, so stay tuned through the week for updates, and I’ll let you know if the current trend will hold.

SUMMARY
–Northwest and west winds gusting over 30mph will die down by midnight
–Lows will drop into the low to mid 20s as high pressure noses in from the northwest
–For Monday, expect a partly sunny day, with some mixed snow/ice/rain showers possible in SVT and the high terrain of northwestern MA
–Highs will be 35 degrees colder than today, only reaching the mid to upper 30s, so gear up
–Lows should dip into the upper 20s to low 30s under partly cloudy skies
–A warm front approaches the region on Tuesday, and highs should reach the low 40s
–Some scattered showers will be possible Tuesday afternoon into the evening
–Lows will bottom out in the low to mid 30s with a few mixed rain and snow showers possible as the front works through
–Wednesday looks like the pick of the week, with mostly sunny skies, light southwest flow, and highs in the low to mid 40s
–Another weak shortwave will approach from the west, clouding things up Wednesday night as temps sit down around 30 degrees, maybe a little cooler
–Some snow showers will be expected late Wednesday night into Thursday morning, which should change to scattered rain showers during the day
–Highs will reach the mid to upper 30s as our cold front presses through the region
–Winter returns Thursday night, as colder air from Canada (that has been bottled up there for a couple of weeks) spills into the region on cold northwest winds
–It should be blustery Thursday night with lows plummeting into the teens
–By Friday high pressure builds in from the northwest, and though it should be partly to mostly sunny, highs will only be in the 20s with lows in the teens
–Sometime late Friday night or as late as early Saturday afternoon, snow looks to break in our region thanks to a low pressure system pushing into western NY and PA
–This storm may form a secondary system south of Long Island, and if that happens, given high pressure to our north, we could have a moderate to even major snowstorm on our hands, with the plow coming back out in the WMass region
–The attached image shows the CURRENT probability of greater than 3″ of snow based on the European model’s take on the storm, and it’s pinned at 100% for many of us, which means we need to pay attention to future developments
–Also, the cold air looks to stay as this storm pulls more cold back into the region as it departs

All this to say, stay tuned folks… the past couple of days were an extreme version of the January thaw, but Winter appears to have more fuel in the tank.

Have a great night!

P.S. I have a couple of 2020 Weather calendars left before I completely sell out, so message me if you’re interested, as a few of you have… when I mean a couple, I literally mean a handful… thank you…

[WINTER RETURNS LATE THIS WEEK] SUNSHINE WILL DEVELOP TODAY, THOUGH CLOUDS WILL HANG TOUGH IN THE BERKSHIRES AND SURROUNDING HIGH TERRAIN… FAIR AND COOLER MONDAY INTO TUESDAY… SHOWERS WITH SOME MIXED SNOW IN SVT TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY MORNING WITH A BETTER CHANCE OF SNOW TO RAIN WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY MORNING… WINTER SLAMS BACK INTO THE REGION THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH THE WEEKEND WITH A SUBSTANTIAL WINTER STORM STILL ON THE TABLE FOR SATURDAY… (9am Sunday)

Good morning everybody, amazing how some of us saw strong gusty winds while others saw zilch, especially in sections of the valley floor this morning.

That’s the power of temperature inversions. You can have a screaming low level jet blowing 50-70mph not even a mile up, but if temps are higher aloft than they are at the surface, that wind isn’t making it to the ground.

The folks above 1500 feet, generally, had a different story to tell, with plenty of mild southwest wind this morning.

Regardless, as the line of showers preceding our cold front this morning continues to truck east, everybody will see westerly winds gust 35-45mph as the sun comes out late this morning, afternoon and evening.

Wind Advisories continue until 4pm.

Our (record) highs have been reached today, and temps will fall into the 40s in the valley by evening, and the upper 30s in the Berkshires and SVT.

Sunshine will develop later this morning and into the afternoon from west to east, though clouds will be tougher to dry up in the mountains west of I-91 in western CT, western MA, SVT, and eastern NY.

Lows tonight will bottom out into the low to mid 20s. Our westerlies should dry up the surface and prevent black ice from being an issue on roads, but any puddles in your driveways, walkways, etc., will freeze up solid overnight, so step carefully tomorrow morning when you head out the door.

For Monday, high pressure noses in from the north, producing partly sunny skies and highs in the mid to upper 30s – seasonable! Lows will dip into the upper 20s as clouds increase.

Tuesday will see mostly cloudy skies and highs in the upper 30s to low 40s. A few scattered showers will be possible late, maybe mixed with snow in SVT and SWNH.

Scattered showers continue at night as a warm front lifts through with lows in the mid 30s.

For Wednesday, sunshine! And pretty mild for a day, highs will be well into the 40s across the region.

Another storm system will track west to east into New England Wednesday night, and we should be just cold enough to start as a period of snow into early Thursday morning before changing to rain on Thursday.

Behind this storm system, Winter returns.

Highs on Thursday will be in the 35-40 degree range, and then westerly winds will gust over 30mph at night, with temps plummeting into the teens for a wintry, blustery night.

By Friday, cold Canadian air is in place, and highs will only be in the 20s with northwest winds gusting to 30mph, producing wind chills in the teens. Get ready, people!

Clouds will increase Friday night with snow possible on Saturday, but timing, duration, precip type changes will all need to be refined as we get closer.

For now, a winter storm is looking probable for the first part of the upcoming weekend, but I will need time to iron out the details and get those to you.

Have a great day, and get outside this morning!! As you can see our cold front is slicing into central NY, so these temps are going bye bye.

Stay tuned for future weather updates! Thanks!
