WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES NOW RELEGATED TO WINDHAM COUNTY IN VT AND CHESHIRE COUNTY IN NH… ISOLATED ICING AREAS, OTHERWISE WE’RE RISING ABOVE FREEZING IN MANY AREAS… PRETTY NICE WEEKEND AHEAD, BUT MORE ICING POSSIBLE SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY MORNING… (6:50am Friday)
Good morning everybody, many of us are already in the mid to upper 30s, but areas in Worcester County and southwest NH that saw snow and sleet over night are likely seeing some light freezing rain this morning, so be careful if you’re in those areas before 7am.
Please post any reports of road or driveway conditions if you are seeing some icing out that way.
We do have other areas of generally lighter showers on the way, but much of that activity should pass north of the Route 2 corridor through the morning.
Essentially, if you live in the northeast Berkshires, western Franklin County, southeast VT, southwest NH, and northern Worcester County be aware of any icy sheens on road ways or other surfaces through the morning.
We are on a mildening trend with temps rising up into the 40s today for highs (maybe a few low 50s readings), so any relatively minor icing threat should be short-lived, and be over by afternoon.
TONIGHT THROUGH THE WEEKEND
For tonight, any isolated showers quit, but we should remain with mostly cloudy skies and lows near the freezing mark.
For Saturday, any morning clouds will dissipate and reveal a mostly sunny day with highs in the low 40s. Light northwest flow will help to drop temps into the mid 20s for lows Saturday night under partly cloudy skies.
On Sunday, we should enjoy highs in the low 40s under partly sunny skies, but clouds will be developing as the day wears on and as a precipitation shield extends east towards New England.
The low pressure system responsible for this precip will be well west of us and passing to our northwest on Monday.
ICING CONCERNS SUNDAY PM/MONDAY AM
While highs will reach the 40 degree mark for many on Sunday, my concern will be for the development of surface high pressure to our north and northeast.
As Sunday night wears on, a cold air damming flow from northeast to southwest may drain colder air at the surface from Maine down into the WMass region.
This may result in a period of freezing rain in parts of our region that could last into Monday morning, with possible impacts for the Monday morning commute.
Lows Sunday night will drop to the freezing mark, or near it, and highs on Monday will only reach the mid to upper 30s with some icing possibly continuing in southern VT and southwest NH.
SECONDARY LOW DEVELOPS MONDAY PM
By Monday night, we will see another low pressure system develop in the Ohio Valley and track east and off of the Mid-Atlantic coastline, staying south of New England.
This will spread more snow and ice into the region Monday night into early Tuesday morning, with some plain rain possible down in northern CT.
This could have some impact on early New Year’s Eve plans, but precip should be moving out before the early evening, so that’s a bit of light at the end of the icy tunnel.
Stay tuned for updates as we head toward the beginning of 2020.
Have a great day!
