Western Mass Weather for December 26, 2019

[HEADS UP] WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES POSTED FOR SOUTHERN VT AND THE NORTHERN TACONICS / BERKSHIRES… SOIME COLDER TRENDS NOW FOR THE SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY PORTION OF OUR SECOND STORM… SOME ICE RISKS FOR ALONG/NORTH OF THE ROUTE 2 CORRIDOR THAT COULD IMPACT THE MONDAY MORNING COMMUTE… NEW YEAR’S EVE DAY/TUESDAY HAS TO BE MONITORED NOW AS WELL… QUICK UPDATE… (12 NOON, THURSDAY)

Good noon everybody, this won’t be a long report, but rather just a quick update about a couple of wintry chances upcoming within the next 5 days.

SYSTEM 1
This will be fairly weak and showery in scattered fashion, but should bring in some mixed precipitation late tonight and into tomorrow morning, with just rain showers south of the Pike and east of I-91.

North and west of Springfield, some sleet, freezing rain, and even a bit of snow showery activity is expected, and could be enough to cause some slippery travel during the pre-dawn hours of Friday morning, with the northern Berkshires, northern Taconics and southern VT seeing the best chance of some light sleet accumulation and/or some light ice accretion.

That activity moves out later in the afternoon.

SYSTEM 2
As I had mentioned yesterday or the day before, if this system slowed down its onset, the potential was there for more of a wintry result, and that is currently the trend for this system.

It now looks to arrive more in the evening, and if high pressure develops over southeast Canada, it could drop a cold front south into the WMass region and create a period of rain showers Sunday night changing to ice and snow, with possible impacts for the Monday morning commute.

SYSTEM 3?
In addition, a secondary storm may develop Monday night and bring more wintry weather to the region Monday night into the first half of Tuesday.

Things can change, but this is all to say that you should stay tuned for future updates to these more potentially wintry solutions as we end 2019 and the decade….

[SPOTTY WINTRY MIX EARLY FRIDAY MORNING] TODAY IS DRY… VERY LIGHT MIXED SHOWERS EARLY FRIDAY MORNING WITH A FEW RAIN SHOWERS IN THE AFTERNOON… DRY AND MILD CONDITIONS SATURDAY LEADS TO RAIN SHOWERS SUNDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING, PROBABLY LAST INTO THE FIRST HALF OF MONDAY… (6:45am Thursday)

Good morning everybody, I hope you had a Merry Christmas if you celebrated yesterday!

We’ve got a couple of inclement weather events upcoming, the first is early Friday morning into the afternoon, and the second is Sunday afternoon into the first half of Monday.

SUMMARY
–For today, a light east wind will help to foster temps in the mid to upper 30s for highs
–Clouds will thicken tonight, which should hold temps from dropping below the upper 20s
–A spotty, scattered field of mixed showers of snow, sleet or freezing rain will pass over some areas, and miss others during the pre-dawn hours of Friday morning
–It’s possible that anywhere north of the Pike could see enough wintry precip to cause a few slick spots for the Friday morning commute
–Any snow/ice should change to isolated to scattered rain showers in the afternoon with highs in the low 40s
–A few isolated rain showers will give way to lows near the freezing mark
–Saturday continues to be the weekend pick, with partly to mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 30s to low 40s
–I mean, you just can’t complain with those kinds of temps in late December!
–Lows will drop into the mid to upper 20s under partly cloudy skies
–We will be in the mild sector (that means we’ll be well east and south of a storm track) of the storm that will track northeast through the Great Lakes and spread the eastern flank of its precip shield through New England Sunday afternoon and night
–Highs on Sunday will reach the upper 40s, but rain should hold off until the mid afternoon
–Then, we rain Sunday afternoon, evening, and into the first half of Monday
–Lows will only be in the upper 30s Sunday night
–Showers continue Monday morning, but should taper by noon or so. Highs will be in the low to mid 40s
–Lows will dip into the upper 20s and an isolated rain or snow shower is possible
–For New Year’s Eve (Tuesday), it looks like a sweet day with highs in the mid 30s under partly sunny skies
–Lows will be in the low to mid 20s for the First Night festivities, and it looks tranquil, if not a bit chilly

We’re doing well with the late December holiday season weather, and the train will keep a rollin’ all night long.

Enjoy the day, everybody!
