Good evening everybody, just a quick update to say that rain intensity will be picking up through 6pm and as we move through evening and night. Rain will continue until about noon tomorrow before we lull out.
In the short term this evening, freezing rain will continue, with special concern for western Franklin County up into the valleys of SVT, and western Hampshire County, into eastern Berkshire County.
Please post reports on road conditions and if you are seeing icing or not where you live or are.
Most icing should end by midnight as temps rise a bit with milder air pushing in from south to north, so please be careful if you experiencing freezing rain, and even if the roads are treated and ok, driveways, walkways, steps, sidewalks may be VERY icy, so be alert.
After we lull out tomorrow afternoon, we will be in the warm sector of our storm before a cold front sweeps through, and some scattered showers will track through the region in the afternoon and evening.
It’s not impossible that we see a thunderstorm with small hail possible before the cold front sweeps the region tomorrow night.
It’s more likely that storms would form well east of us, but the best shot for our neck of the woods is east of I-91 in WMass, and especially in northeast CT, eastern Hampden County and CMass, with timing between 4-7pm, generally.

Good morning! Ever think what it’s like to be a cat or a dog and just have every square inch of your skin bursting with hair?
Alternatively, do you imagine what it’s like to be a cat or a small dog and have some creature 10 times the size of you pick you up because it can, and walk around with you? That’d be like a 50 foot giant just scooping you up from a morning walk and placing you on top of house’s roof 300 feet down the road.
Wait, is this a weather blog? Whoops, I’m slipping in my middle age. As my old buddy F. Alex Johnson once said before we played a gig at Smith College in 1996, let’s get down to business, kids!
WEATHER REPORT
–Temps are starting off generally in the 20s this morning as clouds continue to thicken
–As low pressure tracks north-northeast up the Appalachian Mountain chain, destined to glide over eastern NY and Vermont on Saturday, moisture will be streaming northward into the WMass region later this morning and afternoon
–While a few isolated snow or sleet showers could sprinkle the region late this morning, the best chance for first showers of either freezing rain or rain will be by mid afternoon into the early evening
–It is possible that enough freezing rain could fall in the higher terrain (and even in the northern valley) that roads and surfaces could become slick, so be on alert for that later today and this evening
–Highs will reach the mid to upper 30s with light wind
–For tonight, any icing is replaced by heavier rain streaming northward into the region
–Lows will hang in the mid to upper 30s and start to rise by early tomorrow morning
–Temps will rise well into the 40s tomorrow for highs, with some low 50s in portions of north-central and northeast CT
–Rain will continue heavy at times through the noon hour and then the storm’s dry slot should punch through the region, and place us into a lull
–Showers should redevelop later in the day and evening, with patchy fog possible
–A total of 1-2″ of rain is expected, with the heaviest to the east, and possibly over 2″ of rain in CMass and northeast CT where street and stream flooding has the greatest chance of transpiring
–For Sunday, clouds and scattered snow showers will be possible in southern VT, the Taconics, western hilltowns and Berkshires with highs in the mid 30s
–The rest of us should see highs toward 40 degrees with partly sunny skies
–West winds will be picking up by Sunday morning behind the cold front associated with our rainstorm, and will gust 25-40mph at times
–Sunday night will be cold with lows near 20 degrees
–High pressure swings through on Monday with a calm, cold and sunny day with highs in the low to mid 30s
–Clouds build at night, and then we watch a storm track east-northeast out of the southern Ohio Valley headed for New England
–The most likely scenario as of this writing is for a period of light snow accumulation followed by a change to sleet and freezing rain on Tuesday morning
–If the storm tracks further south, we could see all snow here
–It’s a progressive 3-6″ type system if it remains all snow, but whether it’s snow or snow to ice, the Tuesday morning commute will have some impacts, it seems
–Thereafter, Wednesday through next weekend (at the moment) looks like we enter a fair but cold period of weather, which would be a welcome break for many after this very busy and wintry December!
–There’s an outside chance at a storm that following weekend, but unlike other outlets who just yesterday were bandying about one unreliable piece of model guidance 9 days out showing a total blizzard for New England, this writer respects and values your attention and nervous systems, and won’t engage in clickbait behavior such as that (said model is not showing a blizzard today, case in point)
–And remember, it must be weird to e a cat and get picked up by big creatures all the time
