Western Mass Weather for August 8, 2020

[A PROGRESSIVELY NICER WEEKEND IS FOLLOWED BY AN INCREASINGLY WARMER AND MORE HUMID NEXT WEEK… EARLIER IN THE WEEK WE’RE DRIER, BUT BY MID TO LATE WEEK, PERIODS OF SHOWERS, DOWNPOURS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED AS WE ENTER A DOLDRUM-Y, LOGEY, MUGGY, SLOW-MOVING, AND UNSETTLED PATTERN… LOW-LEVEL HEAT WAVE IS POSSIBLE THIS WEEK, BUT THAT DEPENDS ON CLOUD COVER… IF YOU’RE MAKING HAY, THE LAST DECENT CHANCE FOR A BIT IS SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY… 8:05am SAT]

Good morning everybody, thanks for all the SUPER sweet messages last night about my 9th anniversary of running this page. On to year 10 we go!

As for today, we started off with some showers and thunderstorms along and north of Rt. 2, especially up in SVT and SWNH. One of those storms pulsed up pretty good for a few moment, and those are headed east and out of the region now.

A shortwave is cycling through the region during the first half of today, and as such will float a cool pool of air overhead through early/mid afternoon, so a few more showers or even an isolated thunderstorm may form and wet the ground in a few areas.

Otherwise, we’ll see partly sunny skies on average with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s with light southerly flow.

For tonight, a spot shower is possible, otherwise partly cloudy skies are expected with lows in the low to mid 60s.

For tomorrow, humidity will be rising under mostly sunny skies as high pressure builds into the region. Expect highs in the low to mid 80s. Lows will be in the mid 60s.

For Monday, another mostly sunny day is expected, and it will be humid. Highs will reach the mid to upper 80s as heat increases a bit more. We can’t rule out a spot shower late in the day, but most of us stay dry. Lows will be in the mid to upper 60s.

On Tuesday, the heat increases again under mostly sunny skies, which will launch highs into the upper 80s to low 90s with dewpoints approaching 70 degrees, so it will be quite muggy. Lows will dip into the upper 60s, and clouds will build with a few showers possible late.

The Wednesday through Friday period looks unsettled, as a broad pre-frontal trough slowly spreads into New England, producing periods of showers, downpours and thunderstorms of the slow-moving, pulse variety.

Severe weather is not expected until perhaps Friday as the cold front finally arrives, but it has slowed down its approach, so we’ll be sitting in a soupy air mass for mid to late next week with highs well into the 80s, and possibly the low 90s depending on how much cloud cover is generated.

Have a great day and weekend!
