Western Mass Weather for August 6, 2020

[AFTER A NICE DAY TODAY, CLOUDS WILL BE RULING OUR SKIES FOR FRIDAY AND SATURDAY… AS IT TURNS OUT, A PAIR OF SYSTEMS WILL BRING A CHANCE FOR SHOWERS MAINLY SOUTH OF THE PIKE TOMORROW/FRIDAY, AND THEN SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ON SATURDAY TO THE ENTIRE REGION BEFORE WE CLEAR IT BACK OUR FOR SUNDAY (PICK OF THE WEEKEND) AND MONDAY AS HUMIDITY AND HEAT INCREASES INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK… SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE BY MIDDLE OF NEXT WEEK WITH A COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE… 7:25AM THURS]

Good morning folks, what a super crisp night that was! I even noticed some lows in the upper 40s in Plainfield and up in southern VT in western Windham County this morning! Otherwise, temps are mainly in the 50s to low 60s with dewpoints firmly in the 50s.

A brief taste of Autumn that will NOT be a portent of things to come this month, as we look to be plenty warm as we go deeper into August.

As for our weather today, we can expect mostly sunny skies with a few streaks of morning clouds, and highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. Lows will be in the low 60s under partly cloudy skies.

By tomorrow, a warm front and wave of low pressure will push towards the south coast of New England.

This will spread clouds into the WMass region, so while a few sunny breaks are possible, it looks like a mostly cloudy day for us with list east flow, and highs in the mid to upper 70s.

In addition, the best chance for scattered showers will occur south of the MassPike, especially down into northern CT, and inching up into Hampden and southern Worcester County. A few scattered showers will be possible Friday night as well with lows in the low to mid 60s.

A second system in the form of a trough will push east through NY and into the WMass region on Saturday, when we can expect highs in the upper 70s to low 80s.

Whether or not this becomes another period of scattered showers (although this time for the whole region, and not just mainly south of the Pike) or more of an unstable downpour and strong thunderstorm setup, remains to be seen, and will have to do with how far west a stable marine layer spreads in from the coast vs. the inherent fairly unstable air mass that will be working in from the west.

For now, we can expect a mostly cloudy day with periods of scattered showers and thunderstorms, but if the more unstable scenario pans out, we could see some strong thunderstorms with torrential rain and even small hail as cooler air will be working aloft.

Any showers or storms will dissipate at night, and lows will drop into the low to mid 60s under partly to mostly cloudy skies.

Sunday is by far the pick of the weekend! As high pressure works into the region, we’ll enjoy mostly sunny skies and highs in the mid to upper 80s as humidity starts to increase. Lows will be in the mid 60s.

By Monday, it should be quite humid with highs again in the mid to upper 80s, with some low 90s possible. Lows will be in the mid 60s once again.

The Tuesday to Wednesday period looks unsettled, hot and humid with highs in the mid 80s to low 90s both days, and scattered showers and storms on Tuesday with the potential for severe storms on Wednesday as a cold front works into the region.

I will refine that as we get closer, but that’s the weather news from Lake Wobegon for today, folks, where all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the children are above average.

Have a great day!
