Western Mass Weather for August 4, 2018

(8:05am Sat) MORNING SHOWERS AND DOWNPOURS WILL LEAD TO MORE SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON BEFORE WE BEGIN TO DRY OUT BETWEEN 4-6PM… A FEW STRAGGLER SHOWERS POSSIBLE THROUGH SUNSET… HEAT WAVE EXPECTED SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY… MORE SHOWERS/STORMS TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY BEFORE WE DRY OUT LATE WEEK AND INTO NEXT WEEKEND… FINALLY…

Good morning everybody, Flash Flood Watches continue for our region. We’ve started off this day warm and very humid, with temps in the low to mid 70s and dewpoint temps in the upper 60s to mid 70s, so the air is quite saturated.

As a trough moves in from the west, set to finally clear our region to the east tonight, rainfall has broken out across the region, and it will rain hard at times this morning, causing street flooding or small stream flooding for a few folks. Some thunderstorms may fire up within this slugga rain (Slugga Rain is my Boxing handle, btw). The chance for a tornado is very low today, but possible in this tropical flow.

Expect highs in the upper 70s in the high terrain and low 80s in the valley and lower elevation locations.

After this morning’s rain, we should get some breaks of sun during the afternoon, but it’s during this time that additional scattered showers, downpours and thunderstorms, a few strong/severe are expected to form. The severe weather threat appears to be more toward CMass and EMass, eastern CT, and RI, but we can’t rule it out here, either.

Most, if not all of the rain should clear out by 4-7pm this afternoon from west to east, although a few straggler showers are possible through sunset. Lows tonight will be in the low 60s under partly cloudy skies, with some patchy fog late for some.

VALLEY HEAT WAVE
The Sunday through Tuesday period looks like the hottest we’ve seen since our massive heatwave earlier this summer. This one will be tame by those standards, but we should reach the low 90s each day in the valley (and well into the mid/upper 80s for the high terrain and SVT/SWNH).

Accompanying this heat will be high humidity, though slightly tamped down from what we’ve just been through with these anomalously high dewpoint temps of the low to mid 70s.

Still, with dewpoint temps well into the 60s to near 70 and air temps in the low 90s, heat indices will be pushing the 95-100 degree mark Sunday and Monday, which may prompt Heat Advisories to be posted for some of us early this week.

On the heels of the departing heat wave Tuesday, another area of unsettled weather will move in for later Tuesday through Wednesday night with more showers and thunderstorms possible as high temps settle back down into the 80s with continued humidity and dewpoints in the 60s.

RELIEF ON THE WAY
By late week into next weekend, we should cool down into the low 80s for highs, with more in the way of sunshine and drier conditions. Dewpoint temps should drop down into the upper 50s.

Some relief is on the way folks, but we’ve still got another 5-6 days of humid, summery, convective and hot weather to get through.

And get through it, we will. It’s been a busy and quite summery summer, and I for one would welcome some more Autumnal weather to these shores. I’ll be incanting my wishes over these lands during the coming weeks… Have a great day and I’ll update you all later.
