Western Mass Weather for April 28, 2021 (updated 6:15pm)

WED-6:15P: SHOWERS, SOME HEAVY, CONTINUE IN SOUTHERN VT AND SOUTHWEST NH, AND ALONG NORTH OF RT. 2 AS OF THIS WRITING… MORE SHOWERS AND A FEW NON-SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ARE NOW DEVELOPING AND WILL TRACK THROUGH WMASS/CMASS, AND NORTHERN CT THIS EVENING AND EXIT BEFORE MIDNIGHT… BEST CHANCE FOR A STRONG STORM IS THE SOUTHERN PART OF LITCHFIELD COUNTY IN NW.CT…

Good evening everybody, well our warm front made it through WMass with temps that pushed up into the mid 70s with some upper 70s in northern CT.

The front also made it through much of CMass, but got hung up over northeastern CMass and southern VT and southwest NH which are cooler with temps in the 50s to mid 60s currently.

Rain, heavy at times, has been tracking east through southern VT and southwest NH, and also brushing northern MA in the northern Berkshires and Franklin County, heading for northwest Worcester County shortly.

Another band of showers has just developed in the central Berkshires and western Hampshire/Franklin and is pushing east.

Another line of showers, downpours and thunderstorms is tracking east-southeast through the northern Catskills west-southwest into the Binghamton, NY and north-central PA area.

This will continue to produce some showers and thunderstorms into the WMass, CMass and northern CT areas between 6:30-10pm tonight from west to east, though storms look to be sub-severe.

The lapse rates and wind shear parameters just aren’t looking very robust as this line heads into our region, but some heavy rain is possible a times, and we can’t rule out a storm producing some gusty winds over 30mph or brief small hail, especially in northwest CT.

Showers currently in southern VT should lessen in intensity and in number by 7-8pm, and a little later than that into southwest NH.

Lows tonight should dip into the upper 40s to low 50s, and some additional isolated to scattered showers and fog patches are possible overnight with mostly cloudy skies.

While an isolated shower is possible tomorrow, a steadier area of rain looks likely, starting by late morning into early afternoon, and then continuing into the night and after midnight, with the heaviest rain falling after sunset tomorrow.

Highs will reach the low to upper 60s from southern VT/southwest NH to northern CT (extrapolate into the mid 60s roughly for WMass/CMass). Lows again will dip into the upper 40s to low 50s.

For Friday, any morning showers should be scattered and lighter, and then our cold front swings through during the afternoon, turning the wind out of the west, and producing gusts up to 40mph at times.

Highs in the mid 50s to low 60s will collapse into the low to mid 30s during Friday night as rain showers turn to upslope snow showers in the high terrain west of I-91, with some coatings possible in the southern Greens by Saturday morning.

The weekend looks brighter… mostly sunny Saturday with highs in the 50s to near 60, partly sunny Sunday with highs in the 60s to near 70.

More atmospheric inclemency looks to be on the docket for next week, with seasonable temps, except for early in the week when we should jump well into the 70s on Monday!

The rain is needed for most of the region, despite there being pockets of regional terrain that don’t drain well.

Overall, the rain is a good thing to receive, and it looks like between tonight, tomorrow night and next week, more is on the way.

Have a great night, and if you get any thunderstorms in your area, post your reports below!

WED-7:05A: MORNING SHOWERS GIVE WAY TO A WARM DAY AS OUR WARM FRONT TRACKS NORTHEAST INTO EMASS… MORE SHOWERS, DOWNPOURS AND THUNDERSTORMS THIS EVENING AND INTO THE NIGHT… WE GET A LULL THURSDAY MORNING INTO THE AFTERNOON BEFORE EVEN MORE RAINFALL WORKS INTO THE REGION FOR THURSDAY NIGHT AND INTO FRIDAY WHEN A COLD FRONT PASSES THROUGH… WINDY FRIDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY SATURDAY WITH A FEW SNOW SHOWERS IN THE BERKSHIRES/SVT… COOLER SATURDAY, WARMER SUNDAY AND INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK, WHEN MORE SHOWERS ARRIVE…

Good morning folks, were you ready to rumble? I remember being woken up and hearing a long boom from far away, and at first thought it might be explosives of the human kind (uh oh, danger Will Robinson), but it turned out it was of atmospheric origin, thankfully, and sleep was eventually resumed.

Did anyone get any hail last night?

Final showers from that cluster are exiting southwest NH and central MA as I type, and some sunny breaks are developing in northwest CT and the southern Berkshires, so some nice sunRISE pics may be forthcoming!

For today, we get into a lull as the warm front now over southeast NY continues to push northeast and through the region.

If we get some real sunshine to develop, we could soar into the mid 70s to low 80s, but it looks like clouds are going to occupy most of our skies today, and so it looks like upper 60s to mid 70s are most likely for high temps today, with maybe some upper 70s south if we’re lucky. Let’s see how it plays out. The attached graphic shows a temperature profile today a bit warmer than how I believe it will play out, but we shall see.

By evening, another disturbance will be tracking east-southeast into our region, and another round of showers, downpours and a few thunderstorms will be entering the region through at least the first half of the night.

Some of these storms may be decaying severe thunderstorms from out in New York state where conditions are warmer and more conducive of stronger weather, so we will still have to watch the Taconics, Berkshires, Litchfields and SW.VT for any atmospheric attitude with any of these cells.

Lows will drop into the upper 40s to low 50s, and some patchy fog will be possible late after showers/storms exit the region after midnight.

For Thursday, cloudy skies will prevail as the front will be nearby and may slide back south and west. Highs will reach the low to mid 60s, and more showers are expected later in the afternoon and at night, with lows in the upper 40s to low 50s.

For Friday, a strong cold front will be working through the region, probably by sometime in the early to mid afternoon, with more showers and a possible thunderstorm expected. Highs will reach the mid 50s to mid 60s.

Once the front passes, winds will shift to the northwest and blustery conditions will develop yet again across the region.

A very cold pool of air a few miles up will pass overhead, and steepen the temperature gradient, allowing for wind gusts of up to 40mph to mix down Friday late afternoon and night, and possible into part of Saturday.

Also, temps will plummet into the mid to upper 30s Friday night, and some leftover showers may turn to snow showers across the Berkshires.

We may end up with a half inch to inch and a half of precipitation between last night

The weekend looks to feature a substantial amount of sunshine, so that is good news!

However, it will be cooler on Saturday with highs in the mid to upper 50s and some wind may still be working through the region. Lows will bottom out in the upper 30s to low 40s.

Sunday is the weekend pick with highs well into the 60s under partly sunny skies, with a shower possible in the evening.

We’re warmer into early next week with highs in the upper 60s to low 70s, but more showers develop by Monday night into Tuesday, so while some of us want more sunshine, others want more rain.

The ebbs and flows of life as a human continues.

Have a great day!
