Good morning denizens of the Golden West(ern Massachusetts region), from your feedback about how much you love clouds and gray skies, I thought I would keep them around a little longer this morning for you.

See how thoughtful I am?

In all seriousness, these clouds will be breaking up with time this morning, as a large area of high pressure to our northwest continues to expand southeast through New England, resulting in subsidence (i.e. sinking air) and a dissipation of the cloud deck.

By late morning and toward noon we should see more of a partly to mostly sunny day develop, and temps will respond. Highs should reach the mid and upper 50s in the high terrain, and more like the upper 50s to mid 60s in the valleys and down into northern CT.

For tonight, clouds will build once again as a spinning storm system lazily drags its atmospheric melancholy east through the Ohio Valley, drunk on its increasing moisture acquisition. Lows will dip to either side of 40 degrees.

For Sunday, we’re cloudy in the morning, and while a few stray showers are possible in the morning, the bulk of the rain will hold off until the afternoon, and especially the evening and overnight hours.

Highs will only reach the mid 40s to low 50s tomorrow. East winds will be turning northeast into the evening, and could gust to 20mph or so at times.

Now, at night, our Ohio Valley storm system will give way to a secondary storm that develops off of the southern Jersey coastline and tracks east-northeast to just south of Nantucket Island.

This storm will be slowed down by a couple of low and high pressure cells out in the Atlantic, so it’s not going to rush out of here any time soon.

As this development continues Sunday night, more rain will be expected across our region with cooling temps, and lows in the mid to upper 30s, with some low 30s in southern VT, southwest NH, and the high terrain of the Berkshires and northwest and north-central MA.

After midnight, temps aloft will be cooling below freezing enough to support snow for the high elevations towns of our region.

This will flip some of these areas to sleet and/or snow after midnight and into Monday morning.

The CT River Valley in WMass and northern CT should see rain late Sunday night into Monday morning, but some snow or sleet pellets could mix in at times.

However, the hilltowns either side of the river, northern Worcester County highlands, the Monadnock Region, the Berkshires, Litchfields, Taconics, and southern Greens in VT, especially above 1000 feet, should see a coating up to 2-3″ of snowfall, and the high peaks above 2000 feet could see 3-6″ of heavy wet snow, with those half foot amounts relegated to Mt. Snow, Stratton, Bromley, Greylock, Monadnock, you get the idea.

Rain and snow continues Monday during much of the day as our storm lollygags off of the southeast MA coastline. Highs will only be in the low to mid 40s with a northeast wind gusting over 20mph, very raw day! Showers continue at night, but in more scattered fashion. Some snow may mix in. Lows will be in the mid to upper 30s. Total rainfall should be three-quarters to an inch-and-a-half of rain.

Tuesday sees some high pressure build in, with partly sunny skies and highs in the upper 40s to low 50s, and lows in the mid to upper 30s.

Wednesday will start off partly sunny, but clouds will build in the afternoon, with highs in the mid to upper 50s.

Wednesday night into Friday looks showery and a bit milder. I will refine this timeframe as we get closer to it, but it looks rainy.

Get some fresh air in your lungs and some sun on your skin today. Find a nice spot in the woods and practice “box breathing”.

Inhale slowly through the nose (if you are free of congestion) for 5 seconds, hold for 5 seconds, exhale through the mouth for 5 seconds, hold for 5 seconds. Repeat for 5 minutes.

This expands your lung capacity, stimulates your vagal nerve which helps relaxation, and will increase your oxygenation.

Be well…
