Western Mass Weather for April 17, 2021

THE MELTENING BEGINS… MOSTLY CLOUDY TODAY WITH SOME PEEKS OF SUN, A FEW SHOWERS… MORE SUN TOMORROW, A FEW SHOWERS POSSIBLE LATE, MILDER… DRIER AND WARMER MONDAY, AND MORE SO TUESDAY WHEN SOME HIT 70º… RAIN WEDNESDAY NIGHT, AND COOLER TO END THE WEEK, POSSIBLY WINDY… 6:55AM SAT

Good morning everybody, one thing that struck me about yesterday’s storm where the snow really piled up to 6-12″+, is that while there were some outages, they appeared to be mostly sporadic and short-lived, which is great. Luckily there was little wind – had that been a part of the storm, outages would have increased DRAMATICALLY, so I guess we lucked it out on that score.

One more note is that we generally received 1-3″ of liquid water equivalent (combo of rain and water volume of melted snow), so that’s awesome, given that we had just entered moderate drought into eastern Franklin County and northern Worcester County.

That storm was quite the soaker!

Our weather turns much more pedestrian going forward after such an historic late-season wintry nor’easter – let The Meltening commence!

For today, we start off in the 30s and 40s, and we’ll still be under the influence of our dissipating low now east of the outer Cape and pulling away out into the ocean.

Still, we have cyclonic flow into the region, and so we’ll have a mostly cloudy day with some breaks of sunshine, and a few showers here and there.

Highs will reach into the upper 40s to low 50s with a northwest wind that may gust at times up to 20mph. We could also see some isolated rain showers, but most of the day is dry.

A few isolated showers are possible tonight with lows dipping into the mid 30s under partly cloudy skies.

Sunday is the pick of the weekend, with highs reaching up into the mid 50s to low 60s with snow melt continuing to accelerate. We’ll see partly sunny skies, but also could have a few showers later in the day. Lows will bottom out into the mid to upper 30s.

Monday and Tuesday features high pressure vigorously asserting itself through the region, producing mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s Monday (lows near 40º), and the mid 60s to low 70s on Tuesday (lows near 45º).

By Wednesday, a storm system will be winding up just to our west, and should track northeast through northern NY state.

This will increase clouds into the region, and bring a period of showers ahead of the storm’s cold front, which is slated to move through the WMass region Wednesday night.

Ahead of the front, highs will reach the upper 50s to low 60s, but lows behind the front will be cold, dipping into the upper 20s to mid 30s from high terrain to low. There could also be some rain showers changing to snow showers at night before the precip quits – no accumulation expected.

Thursday is sunny and cold, with highs in the 40s, and may be blustery as well with cooler northwest winds ushering in a new Canadian air mass. Lows will be near freezing.

Friday looks like a fair-day, with mostly sunny skies and highs up above 50º.

Have a great day and thanks again for all the reports, pics and vids yesterday!

P.S. You can see in the attached graphic from the Climate Prediction Center that late April is expected to be below average regarding our temperatures, so we may continue to have some highs in the 40s and 50s through end of month, mixed in with some warmer days.
