Western Mass Weather for 12/5/19

[WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES NOW POSTED FOR NORTHERN BERKSHIRES, NORTHERN TACONICS, AND BENNINGTON COUNTY IN SW.VT FOR FRIDAY] LIGHT SNOW OVERSPREADS THE WMASS REGION BY LATE MORNING INTO EARLY AFTERNOON AS ALBERTA CLIPPER TRUCKS ON THROUGH TO THE EAST… NICE WEEKEND AHEAD… RAIN AND WIND MONDAY AND TUESDAY WITH MILDER TEMPS, AHEAD OF WINDY AND COLD WEATHER BY MID WEEK… POSSIBLE COASTAL STORM NEXT WEEKEND, PRECIP TYPE UNCERTAIN… (7:25pm Thursday)

Good evening, fellow humans. We’re still respirating, hearts are still beating, blood still pumping, muscles relaxing and contracting, we’re still here.

This is good news, and worthy of appreciation, even if you’re hurting at the moment. I don’t know of any human lives without plenty of that interspersed into the mix at times.

But I digress!!

The fact is, we’ve got Lil’ Clippy coming to down, and for that I am a little more than excited.

I’m a big fan of Alberta Clippers.

Quick moving, snowy… like little mini-tempests that leave as fast as they arrive. They freshen up the place, and the snow is generally light and powdery because they emanate from a more arid western Canadian region.

After a cold night tonight with lows in the mid to upper teens and lighter west wind, clouds will increase during tomorrow morning.

Highs will reach the low 30s.

Our Clipper low will be tracking basically right along the MA/CT border as it sweeps east-southeast out of the eastern Great Lakes and through southern New England.

Onset of snow should begin by late morning in the Berkshires and take until about noon or 1pm to reach east of I-91 into central MA and southwest NH.

South of the low’s track, we’ll see a few snow showers, that may even mix with rain showers, and then dissipate by mid afternoon.

North of the track, we expect some accumulating snowfall, and in some areas like the northern Berkshires, northern Taconics, northwest hilltowns of Hampshire and Franklin Counties up into Bennington County and western Windham County of SVT, we could get a borderline moderate snowfall with 2-5″ expected in those areas, assuming atmospheric lift reaches into the best snow growth zone aloft – if it doesn’t, then 1-3″ would do it for this region, too.

1-3″ seems likely for southwest NH and northern Worcester County.

For the rest of the valley north of the Pike in WMass from Springfield to Greenfield we could see a coating to an inch.

For western Hampden County west into southern Berkshires and southern/central Taconics, more like 1-2″ is expected.

Basically, the high terrain of eastern NY and WMass along with the Rt. 2 corridor and points north of it in VT and NH look to get the most snowfall from this little clipper.

It should be light and fluffy, and it should be out of here by 5 or 6pm. Lows will dip into the upper teens.

Saturday is cold and mostly sunny with highs in the 20s and lows in the teens, whereas Sunday is milder and partly sunny with highs in the 30s and lows in the 20s.

By Monday morning, we’ll have strong high pressure set up well east of the eastern U.S. coastline, and strong low pressure tracking northeast through the Great Lakes.

The flows around each of these systems will create a mild moisture siphon and pump rain into the region Monday, Monday night and into Tuesday with highs in the 40s and low 50s. There will be southwesterly wind gusts 20-30mph as well.

By mid week, we cool right back down with westerly wind gusts making it feel colder than the highs in the 30s that are expected.

Late next week looks fair, and then we watch for a potential coastal storm that cannot be ruled out as a snowstorm just yet, so stay tuned for updates.

Here comes Lil’ Clippy!!

Have a great night, folks…

[LIGHT ACCUMULATING SNOW BERKSHIRES AND SVT THURS & FRI] SCATTERED SNOW SHOWERS IN THE BERKSHIRES, TACONICS, LITCHFIELDS AND SOUTHERN VT TODAY… AN ALBERTA CLIPPER SWINGS THROUGH WMASS TOMORROW BRINGING MORE WIDESPREAD LIGHT SNOW… A DRY AND MILDENING WEEKEND LEADS TO RAIN EARLY NEXT WEEK… FOLKS WITH FLAT ROOFS AND EXCESSIVE SNOWPACK MIGHT CONSIDER BUSTING THE RAKES OUT AND DOING SOME SNOW REMOVAL… RAIN MAY END AS SNOW WEDNESDAY MORNING, THEN COOLER NEXT WEEK… (7:20am Thurs)

Good morning everybody, we’ve got an upper level trough (i.e. an area of mid-level atmospheric pressures that are lower than average, which fosters inclement weather) swinging through the region, as you can see on the attached graphic.

This will foster upslope scattered snow showers over the high terrain today (it’s already snowing in the central/northern Berkshires, and some steadier snow showers will push into south county soon enough).

SUMMARY
–After morning fog burns off, expect mostly sunny skies in valley locations with mostly cloudy conditions from the western hilltowns westward and northward into SVT and the Berkshires
–Scattered snow showers today will fall and whiten the ground in spots
–Highs will reach the mid to upper 30s, with west winds gusting 20-30mph at times today
–Snow showers dissipate tonight with lows in the upper teens to low 20s
–For tomorrow, our Alberta Clipper will be tracking east-southeast, likely passing right through the WMass region
–While we should all see some snow showers tomorrow, the most moderate/steady snowfall will fall north of the track, along and north of the Rt. 2 corridor
–Snow arrives by late morning to near noon, and quits by dinner time
–Highs tomorrow will be in the low 30s
–While some coatings will be possible in WMass by tomorrow evening, it looks like 1-3″ can be expected in the Litchfields, Berkshires, Taconics, southern VT and western hilltowns, maybe even extending into Cheshire County in southwest NH
–I also wouldn’t be surprised to see a fluffy inch along and north of Rt. 2 in Franklin and Worcester Counties
–Lows tomorrow night dip into the upper teens
–We have a GREAT weekend coming up!
–Cold on Saturday, but mostly sunny, highs in the upper 20s and lows in the mid teens
–Sunday is milder with highs in the 30s with partly sunny skies, with clouds increasing in the evening, and lows in the 20s
–After some early morning icing, we quickly go to all rain Monday with highs near 50 as low pressure passes to our northwest, establishing southwesterly flow
–More showers Monday night into Tuesday with highs in the low 50s!
–This will create some substantial snow melt, and folks with flat roofs and tons of snow on them might consider lightening those roof loads before over an inch of rain comes down on top of the snow
–By Tuesday night a cold front comes through, and turns any rain over to snow before quitting Wednesday morning
–We are seasonably cold through the remainder of next week

Have a great day!
