Western Mass Weather for 12/12/19

[RAINY SATURDAY SNOWY TUESDAY] SUNSHINE TODAY GIVES WAY TO CLOUDS TONIGHT AND MIXED LIGHT SHOWERS LATER TOMORROW MORNING AND AFTERNOON, WITH STEADIER RAIN BY FRIDAY NIGHT LASTING INTO FIRST HALF OF SATURDAY… SATURDAY AFTERNOON LULLS OUT WITH SHOWERS, CHANGING TO SCATTERED MIXED RAIN AND SNOW SHOWERS SUNDAY… FAIR ON MONDAY AND STILL A PRETTY CONSISTENT SNOW SIGNAL FOR TUESDAY MORNING COMMUTE… MODERATE SNOW STORM POSSIBLE, NOT A BLOCKBUSTER… COLD THEREAFTER… (7:10am Thurs)

Good morning everybody, it’s a cold one out there to start our Thursday with temps generally in the 15-20 degree range under clear skies.

A large, strong high pressure (1038 millibars, for the nerds out there) is centered over western PA and tracking east through the region today.

This will continue to calm the winds, and keep us mostly sunny today with highs in the mid 20s to low 30s with light west winds.

Tonight we quickly cloud up with highs in the upper teens to low 20s or so, as the cloud deck thickens in response to coastal low pressure beginning to track NNE up the eastern seaboard.

For Friday, we will be overcast and as milder air starts to work northward and runs into cold air at the surface, some scattered light precipitation will form, and it should take the shape of light snow, sleet or freezing rain showers, or possibly freezing drizzle by late morning into the afternoon.

While some slick spots may develop, it shouldn’t be a huge, widespread impact, and many of us should change to plain rain showers during the afternoon with highs in the 35-40 degree range.

Still, some sheltered areas in southern VT, southwest NH, and northwest and north-central MA could see frozen precip holding on longer, so it’s something to be aware of.

By Friday night, temps should hold steady and possibly rise a touch, with plain rain picking up in intensity and area coverage.

At this point, it looks like we’ll have a rainy Friday night into the first half of Saturday, with a lull thereafter, with just scattered showers in the afternoon. Highs will reach the mid to upper 40s and patchy fog will be possible.

One more #SluggaRain could move back in Saturday night with lows in the mid to upper 30s before we taper to mixed rain and snow showers for Sunday in the hilltowns and mountains with highs in the mid 30s to low 40s.

Monday is fair and sunny, but colder with highs in the low to mid 30s, but clouds look to fill in by late in the day.

Consistent signals continue to show up for low pressure tracking out of the southern Ohio Valley and sliding to our south, bringing a period of snow for Monday night through Tuesday.

There are still uncertainties in track, but if these signals continue and the storm slides to our south, we could be talking about a moderate, plowable snowfall in the 4-8″ category.

I am not saying that’s how much we should expect, as the storm track to our west bringing snow to rain, weaken from current projections, etc., but it’s just a general idea of the type of system that is presenting on guidance at this point in time.
