Western Mass Regional Weather for July 10, 2022

IT’S COLD OUT! SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS POSSIBLE ON TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING… OTHERWISE, VERY DRY AND WARM CONDITIONS CONTINUE, WHICH WILL EXACERBATE DROUGHT IN THE WMASS REGION… TOMATOES TO JUMP FOR JUICY JOY, HOWEVER… HOW COLD DID IT GET AT YOUR HOUSE TODAY? 7:40am Sunday…

Good morning everybody, as Ringo Starr once said, “another bright day!”

Am I correct on that tomato tip? I know they love heat, but how much water is too much, and how little is too little?

They seem to be doing better this year, broccoli, too. We’re blessed to live in the New England veg basket, that’s for sure.

As far as temps are concerned, it’s chilly out there this morning! A record low of 46º was achieved in Orange, MA which broke the old record of 49º back in 2012.

How cold was it at your house this morning?

Moving forward, another bright day is indeed on the way, with plenty of sun and highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, along with a light northerly breeze as a big core of 1020mb high pressure floats east-southeast into and through New England.

Lows will be in the low to mid 50s overnight under mostly clear skies.

Monday looks like a winner as well, with mostly sunny skies and highs in the low to mid 80s, light southwesterly breeze, and lows in the low to mid 60s as dewpoint temps start increasing ahead of a cold front and upper level trough to our west.

Tuesday is looking like a dynamic weather day with a surge of heat and humidity to be expected.

As an upper level trough swings into the Great Lakes, a strong mid-level westerly flow will develop and help move a cold front at the surface through New York state and Pennsylvania from west to east.

To the east of that feature, strong southwesterly surface flow will cause winds to gust up to 25mph or so at times, and temps will correspondingly rise into the mid 80s to low 90s with dewpoint temps in the 60s, so it will be quite muggy with partly sunny skies expected.

By afternoon (not sure of exact timing yet) lines of showers and thunderstorms will be developing across NY and PA and gain strength as they track east toward the greater WMass region, as plenty of strong wind shear will accompany these storms, aiding their development and sustenance.

The main threat with any strong to severe thunderstorms will be straight line wind damage, along with torrential rainfall.

Any showers and thunderstorms will wane later at night, and lows will drop into the low to mid 60s.

Thereafter, aside from a few Thursday isolated showers, more abundant sunshine looks to be in our cards, provided that the cold front that moves through Tuesday night tracks far enough to the south and east so as to clear our area of additional unsettled conditions, so I will watch that.

For now, it looks like plenty of sunshine returns for later Wednesday through next week with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s behind the front, and then warming to well into the 80s with lows in the 50s and 60s through the period with a bit lower humidity.

Have a great day!
