PERIODS OF SNOW MIXING WITH AND CHANGING TO SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN SOUTH OF RT. 2 BETWEEN 6-10PM... ICY NIGHT AHEAD...
Good evening everybody, thanks very much for all of the reports you provided earlier. At noon I had said that the 1-4″ line would more likely than not be pulled down to the Pike on northward.
However I clearly failed to also indicate that areas along and north of Rt. 2 would end up with more like 4-8″, which is where it seems like we’re heading up that way with heavy snow continuing at times in northern Berkshire County, Franklin County, northern CMass and up into SVT and SWNH.
Even parts of Hampshire County have risen into a 3-6″ swath, with much less in southern parts of WMass and CMass.
Please let me know how much snow you have currently and where you are in the region.
Milder air is working in aloft at dinner time, and we’re changing (or have changed) to sleet and freezing rain in areas like the southern Berkshires, Hampden, Hampshire counties, into southern Worcester County and we’re seeing freezing rain in northern CT.
The zone along and north of Rt. 2 should mix sleet with between 7-10pm up to the state line with VT/NH, but given how cold it’s been aloft, I believe somewhere in far northern MA up north will stay all snow or perhaps a snow/sleet mix at times.
Another two to three tenths of precipitation should fall across the region, and if it falls as all snow, that’s another 2-4″ on top of what we already have in far northern MA into SVT and SWNH, so it wouldn’t surprise me NOW if we see upwards of 5-9″ of snow up there, especially at elevation.
The rest of us are turning to an icy mess tonight with sleet and freezing rain becoming the dominant precipitation types and with that additional precipitation, a tenth to three-tenths of an inch of radial ice accretion is expected south of Rt. 2..
Freezing rain will be more prevalent along and south of the Pike with a mix of sleet and freezing rain north of the Pike up towards Rt. 2 in northern MA.
Everything shuts off between 2-4am in the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday morning.
I’m not buying temps rising into the low 50s tomorrow, but I will revisit that in the morning.
I will likely post again later this evening with an update, please let me know what’s happening in your neck of the woods, thank you, Dave.
