Winter Weather Alert

WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES ARE UP FOR MUCH OF SOUTHERN VT FOR FRIDAY LATE AFTERNOON INTO SATURDAY MORNING... TOO DRY FOR SNOW FOR MANY OF US TODAY, EXCEPT FOR PERHAPS NORTHEAST CT.

Good afternoon everybody, well well well, it is non longer 70º outside! Yours truly prefers seasonable March temperatures, so I’m not complaining much, but it WAS rather rude of Ma Nature to give us such a Spring taste and then yank it away.

Such is New England weather, and on we go as my old friend and bandmate F. Alex Johnson was/is/always be fond of saying.

For this afternoon it has just been too dry to get any wintry precip to the ground, except for a few spots.

We could still get some snow or sleet showers in here, especially east of I-91 in northeast CT and CMass, and some Litchfield or Berkshire snow showers are also possible as a bit of lake effect kicks on tonight.

Lows will drop into the upper teens to mid 20s and it will be breezy at times – quite cold compared to recent days!

For Friday, some early sunshine will be replaced by clouds in the afternoon as a Clipper system tracks toward northern VT later in the day, spreading its warm front towards us.

Highs will reach the low 30s to low 40s.

We should see precipitation in the form of high terrain snow showers, and valley snow/rain mix move into the region in 3 pulses:

1. Warm front (arrives about 4-7pm)
2. Cold front (arrives about 10pm-2am)
3. Behind the cold front / upslope (sets up later pre-dawn into Saturday morning, mostly in SVT, far NW. MA)

This storm will weaken into northwest New England and spawn a secondary low near the Gulf of Maine, and so it will have some energy with it, even though it’s still a light to perhaps moderate level system.

The main impacts of these 3 precipitation pulses is to produce light snow accumulations in the Berkshires, western hilltowns, and far northern Litchfields, with more of a moderate impact in SVT where Winter Weather Advisories are up.

We could see some coatings in the valley floor over into northern CMass and SWNH, but it’s those western high terrain areas that are more likely to see a coating to 2″, with 2-6″ possible in the far northern Berkshires, western Franklin County and especially the southern Green Mountains in VT where snow showers won’t wind down until later Saturday morning.

I will update on this potential tomorrow morning, but if you are on Facebook, click the link below to let me know if you’ve seen any wintry precipitation today, or currently.

Thank you, Dave.
