MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW & WINTER STORM WARNINGS CONTINUE AT 2PM SUNDAY... MANY MORE HOURS TO GO WITH THIS MAJOR SNOWSTORM... HEAVIEST BANDS MOVE IN THROUGH LATE AFTERNOON AND EVE...
Good afternoon folks, many of you know I’m an old snow lover, ever since I was a kid it made me feel at peace when things were in a bad way, and I have to be honest and say that today is reminding me of my very young years, and even some of the great snowy winter days in the early to mid 90s in western MA, as well as that 2013-2015 stretch of winters when this first page first really gained some adoption in the community.
Periods of heavy snow mixed with just a steady state of accumulating snow with tons of smaller flakes filling the air, I am loving it, as much as I know some are not. The folks that aren’t, well, you have your weather days coming that you will love. but today is mine.
As for the afternoon and early evening, we have a long way to go as our primary low weakens and hands off to the secondary low now formed off of the Virginia coastline and bobbing NNE towards a position east of New Jersey this early evening.
The lift generated from that action will combine with existing heavy snow bands located to our southwest over Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Maryland and send the brunt of our snowfall our way after 3pm until about 10pm or so as heavy snow bands continue to develop in our region with time.
Please let me know how much snow you’ve *measured* (eyeballed amounts aren’t great, as they can’t really be verified), and your town and the conditions you are seeing.
As of about 2pm, many of us have between 2-6″ of accumulation depending on where you live (more south and west, less north and east due to the onset time of the snow this morning).
Snowfall rates will continue to pick up later this afternoon and evening, and again a widespread 12-20″ is expected, and I am starting to think that the sleet issue in northern CT is unlikely to materialize. Still, there’s a small chance, but if it doesn’t, then 12-20″ there, too (this is by Monday evening).
I do also still think that if the heaviest bands of snowfall come to pass, which i think they will, areas like central MA north of the Pike, the western hilltowns, parts of the Berkshires, the southern Greens and other high terrain areas will pop a 20-28″ range, as it’s those areas where snow ratios may really spike.
It’s steady as we snow, folks, and I will update again around 7pm or 7:30pm, and probably post a shorter update by 5pm as the brunt of the storm moves into the region either side of sunset.
