SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH IS UP FOR SOUTHWEST VT... EXTREME HEAT WARNINGS, HEAT ADVISORIES AND AIR QUALITY ALERTS CONTINUE TONIGHT. A STRONG TO SEVERE T-STORM MAY IMPACT BERKSHIRES

Good evening everybody, we just survived Round 1 of this sweltering air mass that pushed heat indices over 110º in spots today with highs reaching the upper 80s to mid to upper 90s, along with dewpoints pushing way into the 70s.

We’re in this low-wind, low steering flow pattern where storms can break the cap aloft and fire skyward, and then sometimes rain themselves out because they don’t move much. Their updrafts run out of gas and collapse as downdrafts, killing the storm.

That happened earlier to our west, now we have one that may impact the northern Berkshires and far southwest VT, though this activity is very isolated, so most of us should day “dry”, even though we’re really swimming in the soup at this point given how humid it is.

After any isolated storms that may pop, lows are going to settle down into the upper 60s to mid 70s so there’s won’t be much relief, I’m afraid.

Thursday looks like the hottest, most humid, and most stable day in this heat wave, so I don’t expect any storm activity as of this writing. Highs will reach the low 90s to low 100s with heat indices in the upper 90s to 115º range, so again, hydration, cooling, and rest if needed and you are able.

By Friday and Saturday, very hot and humid conditions will continue with increasing chances at thunderstorms.

They’ll be isolated on Friday but more numerous on Saturday with a cold front pushing into the region, so this could impact late afternoon and evening 4th of July festivities.

Have a great night, keep hydrated, try to get cool however you safely can, and I will update you again in the morning, Dave.
