Weather Nut Update

BETWEEN MILDER TEMPS, WEAKENING LIFT, AND DRIER AIR PRESSING IN FROM THE NORTH, TODAY'S EVENT IS MOSTLY A BUST... HOWEVER, BLACK ICE MAY CAUSE SLICK TRAVEL IN SPOTS OVERNIGHT...

Good afternoon everybody, I have been watching our weather today and looking at recent observations over the past few hours since I last posted, and like I had mentioned at lunchtime, some areas in the southern Berkshires, western Hampden County, and northern Litchfield Hills into the southern and central Taconics may still see a coating to an inch or so of wet snow before midnight.

However, for most of us it has remained too warm and the cold air drain was too slow in developing further south, which allowed precip to stay as mostly rain or a mix of rain and snow with milder road ways.

For some that are sick of winter this may be welcomed as good news, but for plow operators and winter enthusiasts, it’s a bummer. Today was a swing and a miss, and I always feel badly about the busted forecasts, but today is one of them.

Having said that, cold IS coming south at all levels and lows will drop into the 20s and there’s not a lot of wind coming in behind this front.

That means that standing water from rainfall received today will freeze on some surfaces, so black ice is expected on untreated surfaces, so please aware of that later tonight and especially very early Thursday morning.

Hopefully main roads will be ok, but secondary and tertiary roads plus driveways, paths, walkways may develop icy patches.

Lastly, Friday’s system is different than today’s in that it will result from a decaying primary storm and a developing secondary storm to the south of New England.

There are aspects of that setup to parse out to be sure, but there’s a more significant likelihood for accumulating snow by Friday night (though it’s still a light to moderate system at most), and I will update you in tomorrow morning’s report about that, along with the potential coastal system for early Monday (*that* would be big if it hit, but is just worth monitoring for now).

Have a great night… without much in the way of snow!
