Weather Nut Update

December 19, 2025

2:16 pm

THE COLD FRONT IS INTO BERKSHIRE COUNTY WITH MIX AND/OR CHANGE TO SNOW STARTING OUT THAT WAY... ALMOST 25000 OUTAGES NORTHERN CT, 1000 IN WMASS, 8500 IN CMASS...

Good afternoon folks, fortunately the valley has escaped the worst of the wind with max gusts in the 20-40mph range with a 52mph gust down at Bradley Airport in Windsor Locks, CT, though high terrain areas either side of the valley has been more in the 35-55mph range.

Farther east, Blue Hill Observatory gusted to almost 80mph earlier today, with many gusts in the 45-65mph range back east.

Have you seen any stronger wind gusts today? Please let me know.

Final showers the frontal passage itself is lifting northeast through the region, and southerly wind gusts will be replaced by westerly ones as we’re already seeing in the Berkshires where temps have already fallen about 20 degrees into the 35-40º range.

In addition, snow is likely mixing in to parts of the Berkshires and SVT, and so a brief end with snow in those areas is possible.

Behind the front, colder air works into the region through the rest of the afternoon and evening, ahead of another batch of showers which will take the form of high terrain snow or valley rain/snow mix (or just plain rain where it’s still mild enough by 6pm).

Generally, this final-final batch runs through from west to east between say 4-9pm, with some Berkshire/SVT upslope snow showers possible into the early pre-dawn hours (those areas should see a coating to 2″ of snow accumulation before dawn tomorrow).

Scattered coatings are possible in the rest of the greater WMass region, generally north of the CT/MA state line tonight.

Lastly, a smaller but fairly strong low level jet streak runs overhead late tonight and could kick westerly gusts up to 30-55mph so if the wind wakes you a few folks up overnight (especially in the high terrain) do not be surprised.

Have a great rest of your afternoon, and I will update again early this evening when the snow shower setup is moving in.

Thanks, Dave.

P.S. Watch out for black ice tonight / early tomorrow morning.
