Strong Weather Alert

FLOOD WATCHES HAVE BEEN HOISTED FOR SOUTHERN CMASS AND NORTHEAST CT FOR SUNDAY MORNING…

Good afternoon folks, just a quick update to say that the potential for heavier rainfall nudging north and up into northeast CT, southern CMass, and potentially even Hampden County is increasing slightly this afternoon, which is why Flood Watches have been hoisted by the NWS today.

High clouds are already dimming our afternoon sunshine, and clouds will thicken tonight as our low pressure system and warm front tracks northeast and closer to southern New England.

At this point, rain appears to arriving a bit later than originally thought, and so tonight will be dry, and much of the pre-dawn hours as well as clouds thicken and lows drop into the mid to upper 50s.

The first part of the greater WMass region that may see showers is probably the northern Berkshires or SVT. While that may occur just before dawn, I believe most of the first showers will arrive between 6-9am from west to east, and become fairly steady, especially along and south of the MassPike into the mid-day, the way it looks now, with rain ending by early to mid-afternoon, and gone by late afternoon into sunset.

Some downpours are possible with this system given the expected strong upward motions with a nearby jet stream aloft. We may also see an embedded thunderstorm or two, as it will be quite warm 2-3 miles up from the Earth’s surface.

The best chance for street flooding and even some localized flash flooding will be in the Springfield to Worcester Corridor of southern MA south into Hartford to far northeast CT stretch where 1-3” of rain may fall, and perhaps even a little more than 3” in some spots.

Elsewhere, most of us should see between a third of an inch to an inch of rainfall.

I will update again tomorrow morning, and I hope you have a great night!
