CALM AND VERY COLD WEEKEND AHEAD AS BLIZZARD SETS UP TO SLAM NOVA SCOTIA… ONE MORE NIGHT OF BELOW-ZERO TEMPS, THEN A SLOW MODERATION BEGINS, BUT STILL COLD… LIGHT SNOW NEXT SAT?

Good morning folks, I hope something good happens for you this weekend, despite how cold it is. After I went out to get wood for the woodstove today I learned why our Maine Coon cat recoiled in horror earlier when he *thought* he wanted to go out into the screened in porch – whoa! This has been some serious, serious cold like we haven’t had for over a decade, though some moderation is in store for us next week.

For this weekend, however, we’re still in the deep freeze as this most recent bout of Arctic cold moves through New England.

Low temps weren’t as cold in the Berkshires where some low clouds formed, but everywhere else we dropped into the -15º to 0º range, with Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, MA dropping to -15º for one of the coldest readings in the region!

Going forward, highs will climb into the teens today under mostly sunny skies and light wind, with lows in the -5º to 5º range and a northerly breeze at times gusting to 20mph, which could drop wind chills down to -15º to -5º overnight.

On Sunday, we’ll see more clouds the further east and southeast you go in the region, with more partly sunny skies or filtered sunshine from the CT River Valley west into SVT, WMass and northwest CT. Highs will reach the upper teens to mid 20s with lows in the single digits as northerly gusts pick up to as much as 30mph as our Cape Cod Grazer drops 2-6” of snow and then pulls out to sea, headed for Nova Scotia. More below zero wind chills are possible as a result Sunday night.

Once we reach this coming Monday, strong Arctic high pressure will have moderated as it settles into the southeast U.S. behind our then-departed ocean blizzard, and that will give us a bit of a milder southwest flow.

Now, we’re not going to see a February thaw or anything like that, but high temps should come up well into the 20s and lows in the single digits to low teens for the entire week, with some areas even reaching the freezing mark (though most will be in the 20s).

Fair weather is expected through the week under partly to mostly sunny skies dominated by high pressure, and our Thursday system likely stays south of us, not amounting to much down that way.

Our next real chance at accumulating snow would be Friday night into Saturday with a shot at an Alberta Clipper system (that looks a bit robust at this range). This Canadian storm would dive southeast out of Ontario and the eastern Great Lakes into New England, and could bring some light accumulations if trends continue.

Behind that, we’re likely returning to the deep freeze as another Arctic high will be dropping into south-central Canada, supplying fresh new Arctic cold for us to tap into, so our cold, cold, cold and memorable Winter of 2025-26 will roll on by the end of next weekend, again with a decent chance at some pretty-up-the-place type snowfall.

I hope you have a great day, and if you value my work and want to support it through 2026, you can contribute below (my free iPhone app is available for download as well).

Thank you so much, Dave.
