EXTREME COLD WARNINGS CONTINUE THROUGH 1PM WITH WIND CHILLS REMAINING BELOW ZERO FOR HIGH TERRAIN TODAY, GUSTY… COLD WEATHER ADVISORIES LIKELY NEEDED TONIGHT FOR ANOTHER COLD NIGHT
Good morning folks, these next two mornings with today as the filling of our Arctic Sandwich (which will not be the name of my new band) will represents some of the coldest conditions this Winter of 2025-26, but there IS light at the end of the Tundra Tunnel.
Wind chill readings hit -33º in Greenfield, MA earlier, and the bottom line is that it’s deeply cold out there. This will continue through today and tonight, as Extreme Cold Warnings continue across the region through 1pm, and will likely be replaced (at least in part) by Cold Weather Advisories for the Sunday overnight period.
This is because of the fact that strong high pressure to our west in the center of the country is going to be slow to move east, which means westerly gusts today up to 30mph, will sit down to 20-25mph tonight, and then about 20mph on Monday, so it’s slow taper to get to light to zero wind impact.
Anyway, for today, highs will only be in the single digits to teens with wind chills single digits to as low as -10º even at “peak warmth” of the early afternoon. At least it’ll be sunny!
Some blowing and drifting of new snow may continue, especially in the high terrain where gusts to 30mph or more likely.
Tonight is very cold with lows down into the -5º to 5º range with wind chills down to -15º below possible, with breezy conditions at times.
On Monday, the tide start to turn in our favor in terms of clawing our way back up to some sort of seasonable temperature regime, which will mostly occur by mid to late this upcoming work week (though we’ll still be just below seasonable averages).
Highs Monday will reach the upper teens to mid 20s under sunny skies with lows in the single digits above zero as wind continue to slowly wind down.
By Tuesday, we’ll see partly sunny skies with clouds developing by afternoon and highs will climb through the 20s, with some folks cresting the 30º mark.
By late afternoon or evening, we’ll watch a warm front draped southward off of an Alberta Clipper (the center of which will pass north of us) track east through the region, producing some snow showers and possible very light accumulations by Wednesday morning, so some slick spots are possible for the commute, but it’s a low impact setup.
Then once that passes through, we are off to the races with a solid pattern shift into much more tolerable winter conditions, with highs in the upper 20s to mid 30s from Wednesday all the way through Saturday, and lows in the teens.
This will be a fair weather period as well, so expect plenty of sunshine! It will feel balmy for cripes sake, as my Nana used to say!
By Sunday we could have another winter storm on our hands, but let’s get through our last bout of Arctic weather through tomorrow morning, and enjoy a much needed rise in temps for the rest of the upcoming work week.
Have a great day and stay warm!
