DRY, COOLER DAY WITH CLOUDS BUILDING FROM OFF THE OCEAN… CLOUDS THICKEN OVERNIGHT WITH SHOWERS BY EARLY SUNDAY MORNING… STEADIER RAIN AND HIGH TERRAIN SNOW/MIX BY AFTERNOON...

Good morning everybody, we’ve actually got a lot of fair weather ahead of us, save for a stormy Sunday to close out our current weekend.

An easterly flow has developed in response to strong high pressure to our northeast, and this is pushing low level clouds called stratus fairly rapidly westward through CMass, SWNH and northeast CT on its way into the WMass region before mid-day.

We can call it partly sunny on average with our nice start and uncertainty around how far west this cloud deck travels, but if you look east you’ll probably see clouds incoming with time.

Highs today will reach the mid 50s to low 60s with dry conditions, followed by clouds thickening from the west overnight, with lows in the 40s.

Our strong cold front pushes in from the east tied to a strong surface low center that will pass well north of us on Sunday.

This will bring first showers in to the greater WMass region during Sunday morning, and rainfall will become steadier with more numerous showers by mid-day through the afternoon. Thunder is possible, as is a downpours as moisture increases.

At the same time, our high temps will crest into the late morning, reaching the 50s and then falling back by afternoon first into the 40s and then into the 30s in the high terrain.

A secondary low developing along the cold front will help pull this colder air into our western high terrain areas (SVT, Berkshires, western hilltowns, far northern Litchfield Hills) along and behind the frontal boundary as it tracks east through our region.

This is what will aid in changing rain to a mix of rain and snow or a flip to all snow in those areas where some coatings are possible by early Sunday evening, and we could even see an inch or two in the high peaks of the southern Greens.

Northwest winds will pick up and gust 20-30mph at times Sunday night into early Monday, and lows will drop to the upper 20s to low 30s Sunday night.

Monday looks unsettled with a few scattered showers, highs in the 40s, mostly cloudy skies, with the big news being that a hard freeze is expected for Monday night with lows in the mid 20s to low 30s, with some low 20s in northwest MA up into SVT and SWNH.

By Tuesday high pressure moves overhead which will produce mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s followed by low in the mid to upper 30s with a few showers overnight.

The mid to late week period looks mild as high pressure builds south of us and puts in a milder return flow with highs in the upper 50s to mid 60s and lows near 40º under partly to mostly sunny skies with fair weather expected.

By late week another cold front will likely pass through with some showers and cooler temps by next week, but timing is uncertain so I will keep you updated.

Have a great day!
