WINTER SOLSTICE 10:03AM: BREEZY TODAY & TOMORROW… SNOW ARRIVES TUESDAY WITH LIGHT TO MODERATE ACCUMULATIONS THAT PROBABLY SET US UP FOR A WHITE CHRISTMAS...
Good morning folks, we’ve got temps mostly in the upper 20s to mid 30s this morning with southwest flow pushing into the region ahead of a cold front that will pass through by early afternoon, delivering a shot of cold that will set us up for a re-whitening of the greater WMass terrain just prior to Christmas.
In other words, if you’re into the white Christmas thing, it’s looking good in the ‘hood for all who want some snow on the ground for gatherings on Thursday.
This will slow travel down for people who are moving on Tuesday, so give yourself some extra time, though it’s not a big storm with a bunch of wind or anything.
For today, southwest gusts due to the pressure gradient produced from a Quebecois low pressure system and central-U.S. high pressure system will pick up this morning just ahead of a cold front that will sweep the region and deliver a west-northwesterly wind shift with gusts 25-40mph late today and overnight (highest gusts at elevation), along with a few snow showers.
Highs will be reached by around noon, mostly in the 30s with a few hitting 40º prior to falling back later on, with an average of partly sunny skies.
For tonight, a breezy night lies ahead and temps will be dropping down into the teens for lows. Combined with the wind, wind chills will drop to either side of the 0º mark, so bundle up if you’re heading out very early Monday morning.
Monday should be less gusty but still breezy with highs in the mid 20s to mid 30s under mostly sunny skies early, with clouds increasing late and overnight with lows in the low to mid 20s.
Timing of Tuesday snow arrival is still a bit iffy, but some snow showers are expected by early Tuesday morning prior to a steady light to moderate snow shield sets into the region for all of Tuesday, ending sometime Tuesday evening.
This will be mostly a light snow, but there will be moderate bursts more likely than not. A general 1-3” snowfall looks probable across the greater WMass region, with up to 2-5” in the central and northern Berkshires, western Hampshire/Franklin Counties, and southern VT. Highs will reach the upper 20s to mid 30s Tuesday, with lows in the 20s.
Wednesday and Christmas Day (Thursday) look dry and breezy, and cooler than originally expected. Highs should reach the upper 20s to upper 30s each day with partial sunshine, and lows in the upper teens to mid 20s, but for now fair weather looks likely.
After Christmas, on that Friday or Saturday, we have a chance at another winter storm with temps trending more to the cold side, so some more accumulating snow may be on the way for folks traveling back from the Christmas holiday. I will keep you updated on all of it!
Have a great day!
