A FEW SHOWERS OR DOWNPOURS THIS AFTERNOON, OTHERWISE DRY, WARM, SUNNY… HEAT AND HUMIDITY BUILD THIS WEEK… MID-WEEK SHOWERS PRECEDE A POTENT HEAT WAVE WEDNESDAY THRU FRIDAY...
Good morning everybody, patchy dense fog early gives way to a very warm day today with a few scattered late-afternoon showers or even a thunderstorm to end our weekend, which will be followed by an increasingly hot and humid week, culminating with a heat wave with the hottest weather so far in our nascent 2026 warm season. The potent Winter of 2026 is a distant memory at this point!
For today, temps will climb well into the 80s after any lingering patchy dense fog burns off, and we’ll enjoy plenty of sunshine before some afternoon clouds build into the region. With a bit of lingering colder air aloft, a few showers, downpours or even a thunderstorm could pop this later afternoon, but should die off with sunset.
Lows tonight will drop into the 55-60º range with patchy fog possible late, and I expect Monday morning will be the last refreshing ante-meridiem period we’ll see for many days going forward.
Monday and Tuesday will feature surface high pressure starting to do the heavy heat lifting into New England, with highs pushing into the 85-90º range each day under mostly sunny skies with lows in the low to mid 60s each night.
By Tuesday night, clouds will be building as a weak wave is pushed into New England around the northeastern top of an upper-level ridge (i.e. an area of higher than average pressures aloft), which will likely be accompanied by a warm front.
This feature should generated some showers or perhaps a thunderstorm Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, and as it keeps trucking off to the east, it will pull in behind our building upper ridge much stronger increases in heat and especially humidity.
The Wednesday through Friday period (and increasingly likely into Saturday) will result in a full-on heat wave with highs well into the 90s (maybe SVT hangs in the upper 80s?), with some folks by Thursday and/or Friday reaching 100º or so in the Pioneer Valley of western MA.
This heat and humidity surge will occur under mostly sunny skies, as the ridge will fill so much of the air above us that it will produce a stable atmosphere – that is it will be hot to very warm higher up in the sky, so no convection, showers, storms, etc.
Heat and humidity peaks on Thursday into Friday, and I believe that if these trends continue, we could see NWS hoist our first Extreme Heat Warnings for the 2026 warm season.
If you work outside, have respiratory ailments, or other reasons why you are heat-intolerant, you have been forewarned as you’ll need to hydrate, stay in air-conditioned spaces, and otherwise find ways to keep cool as best you can.
By Friday into Saturday the upper ridge will be receding south and west away from New England, so our heat wave should conclude no later than Saturday, and with that some showers and thunderstorms would be possible as remnant heat interacts with incoming cooler air aloft to produce some instability.
Triple H weather is on the way into the 4th of July, so get ready folks.
Have a great day and rest of your weekend!

YOUR NUTSHELL:
–Patchy dense fog burns off soon, lovely morning otherwise
–Surface high pressure with a building upper ridge in the eastern U.S. today through the upcoming week brings, warmth, heat, humidity, and a heat wave
–Today is mostly sunny with highs in the 80s
–A few scattered showers or downpours will develop like yesterday, many stay dry
–These cells would likely kick off in the mountains in the late afternoon to early eve
–Lows tonight 55-60º, patchy fog possible
–Monday and Tuesday are mostly sunny, and very warm to hot with highs in the 85-90º range, with lows in the 60s
–Humidity will be creeping up the first half of the week
–As the upper ridge pushes into New England, a weak shortwave and warm front pushes some showers through the region Tuesday night into Wednesday
–This opens the door for big heat and humidity Wednesday through Friday, and possibly Saturday as well
–Highs should reac well into the 90s to 100º, with dewpoint temps in the upper 60s to mid 70s, and heat indices above 105º
–This could prompt Extreme Heat Warnings being posted for the region, so prepare now for late-week major to potentially dangerous heat and humidity combinations
–Mostly sunny skies are expected during this heat wave, with showers and thunderstorms possible by next Saturday with cooler-but-still-warm temps by end of the weekend
