MERRY CHRISTMAS! SEASONABLE TODAY, MUCH COLDER AND WINDIER FOR CHRISTMAS NIGHT… ACCUMULATING SNOW MOST LIKELY FOR SOUTHWEST MA AND WESTERN CT, LESS TO THE EAST…

Good morning folks, and Merry Christmas! There’s no real discussion today as I handled the details in the Nutshell section of this report down at the bottom (scroll there if you wish), and it’s Christmas so I want to go make some coffee, play some music, hang with my sweetie, and do some last-minute wrapping because, well, Santa got stuck coming down the woodstove pipe, poor guy should think about cutting the carbs out for 2026.

The bottom line for short term impacts today and tonight is that aside from some isolated showers of rain or snow, temps will be seasonable today with highs in the mid 30s to low 40s.

However, a cold front will be slicing through the region later this afternoon, and behind that front northwest winds will kick up and gust 25-40mph as much colder advects into the region.

Temps will quickly fall into the 20s by this evening and wind chills will be heading into the single digits and teens, so if you have Christmas Night plans be sure to bundle up and watch for black ice mostly on driveways, walkways, etc. as snow melts today and refreezes tonight.

Temps will continue to crash into the single digits and teens by early Friday morning with wind chills either side of 0º.

Beyond that, I will update you tomorrow morning on Friday night’s potential snowfall. Certainly areas like Litchfield County CT, western Hartford County, the southern Taconics, southern Berkshires into western Hampden County and immediately adjacent areas look to get a light accumulating snowfall around 1-4” tomorrow night into early Saturday, with less east of there (with some of us possibly getting nothing due to dry air to the northeast and a storm track farther to our southwest).

Have a great day, and Merry Christmas to everybody celebrating, and thank you again for giving an older middle-aged dude a purpose in life.

Peace, Dave.

YOUR NUTSHELL:
–Merry Christmas to those celebrating today
–An isolated rain or snow shower is possible later
–Seasonably cool today, then a cold front swings through later this PM
–Northwest winds kick up to 25-40mph at times producing a blustery, much colder Christmas Night
–Temps fall into the 20s later this evening, with lows in the single digits to teens and wind chills either side of 0º late tonight, so bundle up if you have plans
–We stay mostly cloudy on Friday with highs only in the low to mid 20s, breezy early
–A storm passes well southwest of us spreading accumulating snow into western CT (including Litchfield County) and southwest MA (central and southern Berkshires into western Hampden and western Hampshire Counties)
–Some light snow is possible in the rest of the region (northeast CT, the rest of WMass, CMass, SVT and SWNH) but dry air may cause much less snow there
–I am sticking with 1-4” in the primary impact areas, and nothing up to an inch in the other aforementioned areas by Saturday morning
–Lows in the teens Friday night, the highs in the upper 20s on Saturday with lows in the teens Saturday night
–By Sunday, another storm approaches but the streamflow will have changed from northwest to southeast, to more west to east
–This storm likely goes north of us, spreading sleet and freezing rain into the region by Sunday evening, and possibly changing to rain into Monday morning
–However, I remain concerned for a bigger icing event Sunday night into Monday, so stick with me
–Behind that system, we get cold and windy again by Monday night into Tuesday with fair weather expected into New Year’s Eve at the moment
