VERY MILD TODAY, SHOWERS TONIGHT WITH SNOW IN THE THURSDAY WESTERN HIGH TERRAIN BY PRE-DAWN HOURS… COLD FRONT SWEEPS THURSDAY, VERY COLD AT NIGHT WITH BELOW ZERO WIND CHILLS...
Good morning folks, we continue to have no big storms in sight despite some late January signals of cold air meeting up with a flow that could draw more moisture up from the south to perhaps support snowstorms in the region. Still, like you, I’ll believe it when I see it but as we move into the heart of Winter (late January through February) I will be watching.
As for our weather through the weekend, we basically have two weaker systems (one tonight into Thursday morning) and another Saturday night into Sunday that will bring some light snow accumulations to what I call the “western high terrain” which generally includes the far northern Litchfield Hills, Berkshires, western hilltowns of WMass, and SVT: hilly and mountainous areas west of the CT River Valley that tend to pick up the largest snow totals year in and year out.
For today, we’re starting off mild in the 30s to low 40s and this will loft us in to the 40 and low 50s for high temps as southwest flow maximizes this afternoon ahead of an incoming cold front for Thursday.
Some showers will develop, but should be mostly relegated to the aforementioned western high terrain region this afternoon into the early evening before the moist southern piece that is missing far to our south passes offshore, but helps amplify and push showers further east into the eastern part of my coverage region (SWNH, CMass and northeast CT) tonight.
As this happens, colder air is drawn into areas like the high peaks of SVT and far northwest MA where a mix with or change to snow is expected into the pre-dawn hours, and a coating to 2” of snow may fall in those areas (northern Berkshires, western Hampshire/Franklin Counties, and SVT), with scattered coatings possible elsewhere in the region (though many will see no accumulation).
Lows will bottom out in the mid 20s to mid 30s from mountains to the Pioneer Valley, and snow and rain will wind down Thursday morning as the cold front sweeps through.
As such, highs will only reach the upper 20s to mid 30s tomorrow, and some scattered snow showers or a squall are possible during the day.
Westerly winds will pick up and gust 25-40mph by afternoon and evening through the overnight period as lows drop into the teens. This will push wind chills down below zero for many folks, and in the single digits for the lowlanders of the Pioneer Valley south and east.
Friday is dry, sunny, cold, with highs in the 20s and lows in the teens, followed by a sunny Saturday morning giving way to increasing clouds as another coastal system MAY impact us with some light snow Saturday night into early Sunday.
Behind THAT cold front that sweeps through Sunday, we’re returning to Winter, my friends, with colder temps Sunday through the middle of next week (and likely beyond that) with fair weather conditions before another late-week system may impact us.
Remember to hold the door for someone today, and I hope things go well for you.
