*NEW* WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES ARE UP FOR THE GREATER WMASS REGION AS A COASTAL STORM PUSHES MORE SNOW INTO THE REGION… WATCH FOR BLACK ICE THIS MORN… MOST SHOULD SEE 2-5” BY MON.

Good morning everybody, we’ve got light snow developing across the region this morning, and that should continue through until about mid-day with very light accumulations of about a coating to an inch or so for this first round.

And before I get too far, remember to be aware that black ice may exist UNDER snow, as it is very deceiving, and can send you tumbling, so be careful when you’re walking your dog, going for an errand, etc.

Highs today will climb into the upper 20s to mid 30s, and by about mid-day we’ll see a lull in the snow shield as it breaks up for a time after this first area of lift works through the region. Hopefully not, but sometimes we can see a bit of freezing drizzle or plain drizzle depending on temps during these lulls.

By around sunset and through much of the night, the second and heavier / steadier round of snow will move into the region as the low pressure system tracks off of the North Carolina coastline northeast to a position about 100 or more miles south of Nantucket on its way out to sea.

The huge upper trough (or “dip in the atmosphere”) extends from the Great Lakes to the Gulf and will be turning more neutral, drawing the storm a bit closer to us, but also directing part of the upper jet stream over our region, and it’s the position and lift from that feature that should help produce a widespread 2-5” across much of the region by Monday morning.

I do think a swath of 4-7” should form in areas of southern central MA down into northeast CT and potentially into eastern parts of Hampden County from about Palmer eastward by Monday morning. Areas further displaced north and west like northern towns in SVT and SWNH could also see more like 1-3”.

Lows tonight will dip into the mid teens to low 20s as snow tapers to lighter, more scattered snow showers after midnight, and quits by early to mid Monday morning.

Before the Arctic cold front swings through later tomorrow, high temps should reach well into the 20s with some low 30s in the southern valley under mostly sunny skies.

Behind our front, westerly breezes will pick up and temps will crash into the single digits to teens with some Berkshire snow showers possible.

Tuesday morning into Wednesday morning will represent the heart of this upcoming cold shot with highs on Tuesday under sunny skies only rising to the upper single digits to teens! Low temps will plummet into the single digits above AND below zero, so you will need to bundle heavily Wednesday morning first thing.

Wednesday looks like a sunny winter day with highs in the 20s and lows in the upper single digits to teens before a warm front works our way for Thursday.

We’ll see some scattered rain or snow showers Thursday with highs climbing into the mid 20s to mid 30s with southwest breezes gusting to 20mph.

By Friday another cold front will slice through the region with highs back down into the 20s, with a potential for more snow showers over that following weekend.

Have a great day, and please post your snow and conditions reports later, and I will update by early afternoon.

Thanks, Dave.
