FRIGID START, COLD DAY, SNOW SHOWERS NORTH OF THE PIKE TONIGHT WITH COATINGS TO AN INCH POSSIBLE… MORE SNOW AND RAIN TOMORROW, 2-6” OF ACCUMULATION FOR FAR NORTHWEST MA AND SOUTHER
Good morning folks, we’re starting off super cold with temps below zero in some northerly areas and in the single digits above in other southerly towns within the greater WMass region. We’ll enjoy a “mild-up” into the mid to upper 20s after such a frigid start, which is due to high pressure passing south of us and inducing the beginnings of southerly flow.
This will also help push a warm front through our region tonight on the southwest flow which will transform early sunshine into increasing cloudiness, and some snow showers by 6pm to 7pm tonight, mainly north of the Pike.
Coatings to an inch are expected with these snow showers, but an inch would be pushing it, I think. Lows will drop into the upper teens to low 20s.
For Wednesday, we’ll get a brief break in the action, but a stronger storm passing east through southern Ontario and southern Quebec in Canada will be dragging a cold front across the northeast U.S.
The timing of snow/rain start is a bit up in the air, but I think it begins by late morning and I will try to lock that in better by tonight.
This northerly track of our southern Canadian low will pull milder air into our region for a day with highs in the mid 30s to low 40s. However, we’ll start off cold and so when precip pushes into the region, the western high terrain (Berkshires, western hilltowns, Taconics, far northern Litchfield Hills, SVT and even SWNH and northern CMass) will start as snow and it will stick.
This is an elevation-dependent storm. The higher up you go, the more snow accumulation you will see as it will be colder aloft, and the lower down into the valleys of high terrain areas (i.e. Housatonic River Valley in south county) will be lower, and the Pioneer Valley of WMass east through Hampshire/Hampden Counties into southern CMass and down into much of northern CT will see a mix to mostly rainfall with no accumulation.
But those aforementioned high terrain areas should see at least a coating to 3” of wet snow, and some areas of western Franklin County, northeast Berkshire County and the spine of the southern Greens in SVT should see 3-6”, and maybe even a bit more in parts of SVT by Wednesday night, with lows dropping into the 20s.
Southwest winds will also gust up to 25mph or so Wednesday into the evening, and then our cold front swings through for late week.
Thursday and Friday look blustery with westerly wind gusts of 25-40mph and some continued scattered upslope or lake effect snow showers for the Berkshires, SVT and NWCT.
Highs will reach the upper 20s to low 30s both days under partly sunny skies with lows in the teens.
By the weekend, we have potential for a more widespread snowstorm north of the Pike with some mix south, which could impact us later Saturday into Sunday, but it’s just a signal for now and I will keep you updated.
One thing is for sure is that it will be colder this weekend with highs in the 25-30º range with more cold by early next week expected!
Have a great day, and I hope something goes well for you today!
