POTENT HUDSON BAY STORM SWEEPS THROUGH NORTHERN AND EASTERN NEW ENGLAND FRIDAY EVE INTO SATURDAY WITH GREATER WMASS IMPACTS OF WIND, RAIN, COOL TEMPS AND…. SNOW? IT’S POSSIBLE...

Good morning folks, be sure to run through the Nutshell for the quicker skim. We’ve got a developing, quick-hitting storm setup for Friday night into Saturday about mid-day that is increasingly likely to impact us with rain, wind, unseasonably cool temps, and even some highest-terrain snow, with the brunt of impacts moving through Saturday morning.

For today, a weak wave dives from north to south through our region with partly to mostly sunny skies to start followed by some bubbling clouds and isolated to widely scattered showers or a thunderstorm or two with heavy rain possible. Severe weather is not expected. Highs will be warm, but not like the past two days, cresting into the upper 60s to mid 70s.

For tonight, any afternoon/evening activity dies out and lows drop into the upper 40s to low 50s under partly cloudy skies.

For Friday we’ll start off quite nicely with partly to mostly sunny skies with highs once again reaching the upper 60s to mid 70s.

However, clouds will be building in the afternoon and I will be watching a powerful (though small) storm system careen south-southeastward out of Hudson Bay Canada, through western Quebec and into northern New England on its way to the eastern MA region for Friday night through Saturday.

As clouds build in the afternoon, we’ll see a warm front tracking northwest to southeast, which is quite rare in our part of the world, and that will be spreading scattered showers with some heavier cells into our region by late Friday afternoon and especially during Friday night into the early pre-dawn hours.

The heaviest activity with some thunder possible will east of the I-91 corridor into SWNH, CMass and northeast CT.

There is a LOT of upper level cold air with this system, so the air behind this “warm front” will not be warm, and as the storm’s cold front sweeps toward our region, a second more steady (yet briefer) round of precip will be tapping into that cold air aloft and pulling it down toward the surface, causing temps to cool into the 30s to low 40s for lows.

This may flip some areas to snow in the high terrain of northern MA, SVT and SWNH, likely in areas above 3000 feet, but snow could mix down to areas between 1500-3000 feet if things line up.

Expect a showery and increasingly windy Saturday morning as the storm passes to our east and draws strong northerly gusts into our region in its wake, blowing 30-45mph for a time on Saturday morning, and tapering down to 15-30mph by early to mid afternoon as showers dissipate.

We’ll be left with a cool day with highs only in the upper 40s to mid 50s with mostly cloudy skies, but I’m hopeful for some sunny breaks later in the afternoon. Lows will drop to the upper 30s to mid 40s.

Sunday is completely the opposite with sunshine developing and warmer highs in the upper 60s to mid 70s with lows near 50º, as if nothing ever happened on Saturday.

More showers and continued mild temps will return early next week, and I’ll get to those details, but for now I am going to be focused on this Friday evening into Saturday anomalous storm system and will keep you updated the whole way until Saturday early afternoon when the biggest impacts will be ending.

Thanks for reading, and have a great day!
