ALERT: FREEZING FOG AND BLACK ICE THIS MORNING… MORE SLEET, FREEZING RAIN AND RAIN ON THE WAY TOMORROW NIGHT INTO FRIDAY MORNING… SOME SHOWERS SUNDAY... MILDER WEEKEND...
Good morning folks, what a mess out there this morning after anywhere from 1-8” of snow across the region and sleet and freezing rain ice accretion, plus freezing fog and black ice this morning… are we having fun yet?
The Winter of 2025-26 keeps rolling on, and if you didn’t have enough fun last night and this morning, boy oh boy, have I got good news for you — MORE ICY TRAVEL for tomorrow night into Friday morning, everybody’s favorite!
I can already hear the childlike screams of glee and excitement across the valley.
In fact, I imagine that for everybody reading this, my news of impending icy gloom is probably akin to the experience those young girls had when they first saw The Beatles live back in the early 60s – so exciting! I wanna hold sleet’s hand!
But please folks, we’re still in early innings!
Don’t get yourselves worked up into a joyous lather just yet, you must exercise patience! It’ll be here before you know it but we first have to get through today, tonight and tomorrow, which I know is very disappointing because what we all want is MORE SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN, AND WE WANT IT NOW.
Aaaaaaaaand Scene.
Just trying to add some levity, folks. ;-)
For today, freezing fog and black ice provides for slippery travel early, with sunshine breaking through later this morning or by mid-day with highs in the 40s given the snow pack and recent ice.
However, by tonight, more patchy fog is likely as temps crash down into the low to mid 20s, so with refreezing and fog in the 20s more icy spots are expected early Thursday morning.
Clouds will increase Thursday with highs hanging in the low to mid 40s, and some rain showers scattered about should develop by afternoon ahead of another incoming storm system that will bring wintry conditions overnight into Friday morning.
A warm front will try to push into and through our region, but strong high pressure looks position its center over Maine and New Brunswick, Canada by Thursday afternoon and night.
As this storm pushes its main precip shield into our region between 8pm and midnight from west to east Thursday night, rain and cooling temps will combine with incoming cold air to flip many of us along and north of the Pike to freezing rain and sleet with plain rain continuing in northern CT (except for perhaps northern Litchfield County which will be colder).
This drain (a/k/a a “cold air damming” event) will likely continue all night and may become so strong that areas north of the Rt. 2 corridor may turn to snow or a snow and sleet mix with light accumulations of a coating to 3” up that way.
The Friday morning commute looks like a mess right now with mixed precipitation continuing through the morning and dissipating by mid day or so. I will have to update on timing, precip changes, etc. as we get closer. These mixed storms are pain in the butt, to be honest.
Friday looks cold with highs only in the mid 30s to low 40s as precip comes to an end by afternoon, with lows near freezing as dry out.
A ridge should start setting up in the east with milder highs in the mid 40s to mid 50s both weekend days with sunshine on Saturday giving way to a weak area of showers that move through Saturday night, followed by partial sunshine on Sunday.
Then once we get to the first half of next week through Wednesday, temps are progged to really come up, through the 50s, and potentially into the low to even mid 60s by mid-week, so that’ll get snow and ice melting.
That’s the next deeper Spring surge of temps, but this time of year, what goes up must come down usually, and another cold shot is in the offing for late next week. With an active pattern setting up for the 3rd week of March, I can’t rule out more winter weather, so I will keep you updated on our slow exit of this very challenging winter.
Have a great day!

YOUR NUTSHELL:
–Patchy freezing fog with temps in the upper 20s to low 30s early
–Black ice is fairly widespread, so give yourself extra time moving around
–Highs hang in the 40s today with sunshine developing later
–If sun develops sooner, some of us may bust into the low 50s
–Lows tonight crash into the 20s with patchy freezing fog expected, so watch for black ice late once again, and early tomorrow morning
–For Thursday, high pressure sets up in Maine by evening
–Highs hang in the upper 30s to mid 40s, and cold air drains southwest from Maine into the greater WMass region
–Clouds will thicken, and some rain showers are expected to be scattered by afternoon
–As we move into Thursday night, a storm tracks east into the region along a frontal boundary, which stays south of us
–This allows colder air drain in as the main precip shield arrives west to east 8pm-Midnight
–We’ll see rain change to freezing rain and sleet north of the Pike pretty quickly, with some snow possible north of the Rt. 2 corridor overnight
–Winter Weather Advisories will likely be needed again, and Friday morning commute looks icy / slippery for areas along and north of the Pike
–Highs Friday after that mess clears out only reach the mid 30s to low 40s with lows near freezing
–The weekend is mixed with some showers Saturday night into Sunday, but highs should be milder reaching the mid 40s to mid 50s both days
–By early next week high pressure should position to our south and pump even milder air into the region with highs in the mid 50s to mid 60s Monday through Wednesday before another cold shot sets up for late week
