HIGH WIND WATCHES HAVE BEEN HOISTED FOR WMASS & CMASS TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY NIGHT & WIND ADVISORIES UP FOR SVT… FREEZING RAIN TURNS TO PLAIN RAIN THIS MORNING, RAIN ENDS EARLY PM
Good morning folks, a powerful mid-latitude cyclone is ripping northeast out of southeast Ontario and into western Quebec this morning, and it will continue to deepen today as it tracks away from us tonight.
This will set us up for the storm’s strong cold front to pass through our region later this afternoon which will produce strong gusty westerly winds tonight and especially Tuesday and Tuesday night.
Before that happens, we’re wrapping up a period of freezing rain in the greater WMass region as temps will continue to rise without cold high pressure to our northeast keeping sub-freezing temps trapped at the surface.
Icing is still occurring in some areas of WMass, CMass and SVT, but has changed to plain rain in most of our region along and south of Rt. 2 with temps nudging up above freezing, so Winter Weather Advisories have been expired in WMass, CMass and NCT but remain in SVT/SWNH through 10am.
Patchy dense fog will contribute to slower travel this morning, though it sounds like many main roads are just wet and have been treated well. It’s the secondary and tertiary roads that are likely to be the most slippery/icy, and of course your walkways, steps, stoops, driveways, etc. so be careful out there.
Highs will spike into the upper 30s to mid 40s today with periods of rain this morning, tapering off by early afternoon as our front swings through our region.
This will cause a wind shift around to the west and drying to commence by mid to late afternoon.
Temps will fall back and gusts will pick up and reach speeds of 30-45mph by tonight.
While this will cause drying of wet surfaces, please do watch out for areas of black ice tonight as temps crash into the teens to low 20s overnight with wind chills dipping down below zero for high terrain areas, and into the single digits above zero by early Tuesday morning.
In other words, bundle up, peeps!
Tuesday into Tuesday night will feature a strong low level jet moving overhead, and with much colder temps aloft, we will mix those winds down to the surface to produce gusts out of the west reaching 35-60mph tomorrow, highest gusts in the high terrain.
This will cause some isolated to perhaps widely scattered tree damage and/or power outages, and with highs only in the upper teens to mid 20s, it’ll be a very wintry and blustery day indeed. Blustery conditions will carry into Tuesday night with continued gusty winds and lows in the teens with wind chills in the single digits.
By the day of New Year’s Eve (Wednesday), wind should be slackening and highs will come up a bit into the mid 20s to low 30s, but it’ll still be cold.
Clouds will increase as a shortwave approaches the region New Year’s Eve and this could produce some snow showers, flurries, or even a period of light snow during First Night. It’ll be a VERY minor event, but could provide some festivity to the proceedings as we ring in 2026 and place 2025 in the rearview mirror.
Bundle up for First Night stuff as it’ll be cold with lows dropping into the single digits to teens.
New Year’s Day looks quite cold with highs in the teens to low 20s, breezy, and a few snow showers will be possible amidst partly sunny skies in general. New Year’s Night will be very cold with lows in the single digits.
Cold and fair conditions continue Friday into the weekend with highs in the 20s and lows in the upper singles to teens as high pressure settles into the region.
Have a great day, and let me know what you’ve seen in terms of icing this morning. Thanks, Dave.
