ACTIVE FLASH FLOOD WARNINGS ARE UP THIS MORNING… PERIODS OF HEAVY RAIN & THUNDER TODAY WITH STREET FLOODING… VERY HUMID… TUESDAY IS A SUNNY, DRIER BREAK IN THE ACTION…

Good morning folks, we have ongoing flash flooding in Hampden County, Hartford County and soon parts of Worcester County which are all under Flash Flood Warnings this morning. Earlier Route 5 in West Springfield was closed due to flooding of 2 under passes at the Memorial Bridge and the North End Bridge from Springfield to West Springfield across the CT River.

Periods of heavy rain will continue today as a storm tracks near the New York / Canada border with an upper low to our west that will both siphon copious moisture thru the greater WMass region today.

Highs will hang in the 70s, and periods of moderate to very heavy rain will persist this morning with some type of lull possible around late morning into mid-day.

Street flooding and flash flooding is ongoing and/or probable for some of us, especially in north-central to northeast CT, Hampden County, easternmost Hampshire and Franklin Counties into CMass, with less north and west. Embedded morning thunder is also likely for a few isolated areas.

Belchertown MA already saw 3” of rain and more is coming with dewpoints well into the 70s producing tropical dewpoint temperatures which aids in efficient rain drop and heavy rainfall production in these types of setups.

After whatever lull we can muster either side of mid-day should be filled in by a final broken squall line of downpours and/or thunderstorms, one or two of which may become strong to even marginally severe with strong gusty winds possible. This would occur between 3-7pm, most likely.

The front will come through this evening, and lower our humidity to more tolerable levels, end the rainfall, and allow temps to drop into the mid 50s to near 60º.

Tuesday will feature a brief period of high pressure and therefore a mostly sunny day is expected with highs in the low 70s to low 80s, so be sure to get outside and soak it up! Lows will dip to the mid to upper 50s.

The Wednesday through Sunday period will feature a more zonal flow with disturbances moving through the broad and more flattened upper trough pattern that will produce warm highs in the mid 70s to mid 80s, while both keeping heat suppressed to our south.

We’ll still pull some humidity back into the region during this timeframe, and as these disturbances work through from west to east, we’ll see periods of scattered showers or thunderstorms at times, and possible each day during that period.

I will update as we get closer, but today is the big weather impact day this week the way it looks now, so turn around and don’t drown if you encounter flooded roadways!

Have a great day!
