HIGH WIND WARNINGS AND WATCHES HAVE BEEN HOISTED REGION-WIDE FOR TONIGHT… DOWNPOURS AND T-STORMS MAY CAUSE ISOLATED WIND DAMAGE 8PM-MIDNIGHT...
Good morning folks, we’ve got potential tonight for some wind damage which is arising due to the fact that a low pressure center will be tracking east from the Great Lakes through northern New England tonight, strengthening the whole way as it leaves a steep pressure gradient in its wake, kind of like a bigger boat in water as it drags through an area (remember that air is a fluid, like liquid water).
Backing up, any morning sunshine will cover over with clouds this morning into the afternoon, and southwest breezes may gust up to 25mph at times with highs reaching the mid to upper 50s.
Clouds thicken later this afternoon, and then our low pressure system will be tracking into northern NY and dragging its cold front toward the greater WMass region early this evening.
Ahead of that feature will be some scattered showers (mostly north of Rt. 9 in MA), which will then be followed by a line of showers, downpours and thunderstorms. Some storms may tap into the stronger winds aloft and mix bursts of locally damaging winds as they pass through, and in addition, the line itself will trucking west to east so this has me a bit concerned BEFORE the expected cold advection winds move in mostly after midnight.
So, that front comes through with showers and storms, and then a sharp pressure rise pushes right in behind our cold front, squeezing the pressure gradient up against the deepening low tracking into Maine, and it is this squeeze play that will cause strong wind gusts of 40-60mph to develop overnight, possibly reaching speeds of 65mph.
As per usual, the lower gust ranges associate with valley locations and upper gust ranges with the high terrain. Scattered outages will occur across the region, probably with higher incidents in the high terrain overnight as lows drop into the 30s with a few snow showers possible in SVT or northwest MA.
Thursday is windiest in the early morning, but blustery much of the day with gusts up to 40mph after the blast works east and out of here, with highs only in the 40s. Lows at night will dip to the 20s for a cold night under clearing skies.
Friday is milder and partly sunny between fronts, reaching the upper 40s to mid 50s with clouds building late as another front swings through the region at night into Saturday morning with more scattered showers, though a washout is not expected, nor any real thunder.
This weekend looks mild as southerly flow works into the region with drying by Saturday afternoon and highs in the 55-60º range with highs well into the 50s by Sunday. However, by Sunday afternoon we’re likely raining again with another system passing well north of us, with rain lasting into Sunday night.
By early next week, a big upper trough from Canada sets up shop and delivers the first taste of early Winter cold with highs in the mid 30s to mid 40s, and a chance at more blustery conditions (i.e. windy) and with a chance at some lake effect snow showers or flurries for the Berkshires, Taconics, western hilltowns and SVT.
Lots of changes coming up, and I will keep you updated the whole way, have a great day!
