WATCH FOR BLACK ICE… A PAIR OF COLD FRONTS REINFORCE UNSEASONABLE COLD THROUGH THE GREATER WMASS REGION TOMORROW NIGHT AND AGAIN SUNDAY NIGHT…
Good morning folks, once again thank you for all the condition reports yesterday, it helps get a picture for the region and helps your neighbors see what’s happening in areas they may have to travel to, areas they have family in, and it’s interesting to see what’s happening around the 10,000 square mile region I cover that I’ve termed “the Greater Western Mass. Region” which covers SVT, SWNH, WMass, CMass, and NCT – basically all New England areas/counties that border with the 4 WMass counties.
As for our weather going forward, we’ve below freezing and have already heard of accident reports due to black ice this morning, so be careful out there as you head out.
The main story going forward (now that many of us have started a snow pack) is ccccccold cccccconditions as we’re set to receive two cold-frontal shots of very cold Canadian air into New England tomorrow night and again on Sunday night.
For today, we’ll develop mostly sunny skies as our storm clears out to sea, with highs in the low to mid 30s as light northwest winds go calm with high pressure moving in from our southwest. Lows tonight will sit down to either side of 20º, so our snow pack is not going anywhere.
However, do remember that for folks that get above freezing, some snow melt will occur and then freeze tonight and again tomorrow night, so black ice will continue to be something to be aware of.
Thursday also features highs in the low to mid 30s, but it we’ll see a mix of sun and clouds and a cold front will be pressing into the region, set to deliver the coldest air of the nascent winter season.
Between late morning and late afternoon, some scattered snow showers, flurries, or even a snow squall will be possible, and I can’t rule out some isolated fresh coatings or dustings.
Northwest winds pick up late afternoon and during the first part of Thursday night gusting 20-40mph and dropping wind chills down to near 0º, as temps crash into the single digits by early Friday morning, which is very anomalous cold air for early December!
Friday is cold with highs in the 20s with lows in the low to mid teens as clouds build due to a storm passing out to sea well south of us. Still, a few CT snow showers are possible late Friday night into Saturday.
For most of us, Saturday is dry with partly sunny skies (more cloudiness to the south than north) and highs in the low to mid 30s (we’ll see similar highs for Sunday, as well). Lows will dip into the teens.
A second cold front should move through the region by Sunday night with a few snow showers possible late Sunday.
By Sunday night, lows will crash into the upper single digits to mid teens followed by another cold and sunny Monday, with highs only in the 20s and lows again in the single digits.
The cold will be persistent, and set us up for the potential for oa light snow event on Tuesday or Wednesday as a series of moisture-starved northern stream waves with the potential to sweep through Tuesday, Thursday and next weekend, but we’ll deal with one at a time, and see how they develop as we get closer.
Have a great day!
