COLD AND BREEZY TODAY, VERY COLD AND CALM TONIGHT… A FEW SNOW SHOWERS TUESDAY NIGHT, THEN A BIT MILDER WITH HIGH-TERRAIN SNOW AND VALLEY RAIN/MIX WEDNESDAY...

Good morning folks, the main weather headline as of late is cold, cold, cold, as this is the coldest start to December that I can remember since 2013 which turned out to be a very strong winter (and is when this page first gained adoption in western MA, coincidentally).

As far as our weather today, we will experience breezy conditions with west and northwest winds gusting 20-30mph for the first half or so of the day, which will slacken later as high pressure that is now spread across the middle third of the country tracks east-southeast.

This will weaken the pressure gradient such that after we move through high in the upper teens to mid 20s under mostly sunny skies (with wind chills in the low to mid-teens), we’ll see wind slacken to allow radiational cooling to develop tonight, which will produce lows in the single digits across the region.

By Tuesday, highs will be a touch milder, but still very cold in the mid to upper 20s, and any early sunshine will give way to increasing clouds as high pressure passes to our south, and a weak system pushes in from the west. By evening and at night, an area of snow showers will move through the region, but any impacts would be very light and confined likely to areas along and north of the Rt. 2 corridor in northern MA, SVT and SWNH.

Lows Tuesday night will drop into the upper teens to mid 20s, and some coatings to an inch of snow will be possible, especially in northern areas.

By Wednesday, a stronger storm system will be tracking along the Canadian / U.S. border, and will swing to our north, which will open a southerly, milder flow into our region during the day.

We should be dry in the morning, but by mid-day, high terrain snow and valley rain/mix will push into the region from the west, with highs reaching the mid 30s to low 40s.

Accumulations by Wednesday night of a coating to 3” or so is possible in the Berkshires, northern Litchfield County, western hilltowns, northern CMass, and SVT/SWNH, with some low terrain slushy coatings possible with rain more likely in the Pioneer Valley down into northern CT, especially from Northampton east and south. Lows Wednesday night will drop into the 20s, so black ice is possible by early Thursday morning.

By Thursday and Friday, a cold front swings through behind that storm, and will drop our temps into the low to mid 30s for highs with lows either side of 20º. What’s more notable is that we should blustery conditions develop with gusts out of the northwest in the 25-40mph range through Thursday, Thursday night and Friday under partly to mostly sunny skies.

Then by Friday night through Sunday, one or two Alberta Clipper systems may bring more periods of light to moderate snow to our region, but that’s a long way out and those chances could evaporate, so I will keep you updated as the days pass us by.

Have a great day, and I hope something goes well for you today!
