RAIN SHOWERS BY THIS EVENING, SATURDAY IS THE WEEKEND PICK, SUNDAY MAY SEE A MORNING BURST OF SNOW/RAIN, THEN SCATTERED SHOWERS FOLLOWED BY RAIN SOUTH AND SNOW NORTH SUNDAY NIGHT

Good morning folks, we’ve got a series of east-southeastward tracking Clipper systems over the next 7 days, potentially, and some of those could still bring snow to parts of our area, especially elevated and/or northern areas of the greater WMass region – Happy Spring?

Yes, Happy Spring indeed, we made it! The Winter pattern will not stand but for now, it kind of is going to stand for the next week because we have a giant, historic, record-breaking upper ridge centered over the southwestern U.S. which is absolutely baking that region with very hot temperatures.

This big ridge in the west creates more of a trough in the east, and consequently as energy rounds the top of the ridge in the west it tracks east towards the Great Lakes, and is then directed east-southeast into New England in this setup.

That’s why we’re going to see all these Clippery systems with rain AND some snow at times, especially either at night, at elevation, or in areas mostly well north of the Pike.

The first comes tonight after a sunny start and cloudy finish, with rain moving in by later afternoon and lasting to around or just past midnight before it keeps on truckin’ out to sea.

Before tonight’s showers, southwest winds will gust 20-35mph ahead of that system system, with highs in the mid 40s to mid 50s, followed by lows tonight in the 30s.

Saturday is by far the Spring-y weekend pick with sunny skies developing and highs in the 40s to low 50s. It’ll be breezy behind tonight’s system, so northwest gusts would reach 15-30mph, so that’ll put a bit of chill in the air, but it’ll be a great day for outdoor activities and travel from what I can see.

Clouds increase at night as a warmer air tries to work into the region, which could produce some snow showers in the region overnight into very early Monday, before we break into a more scattered shower pattern with highs in the 40s to low 50s. All in all, Sunday looks unsettled, though not a washout during the day.

By Sunday evening, though, steadier precipitation moves in as colder air is working south into our region from the north.

As rainfall increases into Sunday night, some areas north of Rt. 2 (especially at elevation) will mix with and probably change to wet snow. How far south and lower in elevation this occurs, I am unsure right now, but northern MA, SVT and SWNH could see some wet snow accumulations by Monday morning. After that, scattered snow or mixed showers are expected through Monday morning before we taper off.

Highs will be colder behind this system and its front, with highs only in the mid 30s to mid 40s, followed by lows in the 20s.

Tuesday looks chilly but nice with highs in the 30s to low 40s, with clouds increasing at night with lows in the 20s.

Yet another Clipper system may visit us on Wednesday with a mix of rain and snow, and after fair weather on Thursday, ANOTHER system may bring more rain and/or snow for Friday, so we have a busy pattern of not hugely impactful Clipper systems expected at this point, and I will keep you updated on all of it.
