HEAT ADVISORY CONTINUES TODAY FOR THE VALLEY POINTS EAST, BUT LESS HOT THAN YESTERDAY… A FEW SHOWERS OR THUNDERSTORMS SOUTH OF THE PIKE LATER THIS AFTERNOON, ONE MAY BECOME SEVERE…
Good morning everybody, we’ve got one more day of this most-anomalous early-season heat and humidity, but similar to the first round in April when it reached the 80s and touched 90º for a day, this will also not last, nor do I see a return to such hot temperatures anytime soon. For today, though, very warm to hot and humid conditions with isolated showers and t-storms south of the Pike is in the cards.
Heat Advisories continue for the Pioneer Valley of WMass down into Hartford County CT and points east through the rest of northeast CT and CMass.
The heat peaked yesterday, so while it will still be very warm to hot, highs will be mostly in the 80s to low 90s under a mix of sun and clouds into this afternoon, with a cold front pushing into the region during the afternoon.
We do not have all of the ingredients necessary to produce severe weather, but enough will be present (including steep low level thermal lapse rates, meaning that in the low levels, temps will cool rapidly) that some showers and thunderstorms will form mostly south of the Pike later on.
A storm or two may become strong to severe with strong gusty winds, but I think the threat overall is less compared to yesterday.
After any activity moves through by this mid to late afternoon, we can’t totally rule out a few showers overnight (again along and south of the Pike) but in generally drying air will be moving into the region.
Temps will crash into the 40s to low 50s for lows with northwest breezes forming, and this will introduce a much drier and cooler Thursday which will bring welcome relief to many.
Highs Thursday and Friday should hang in the mid 60s to low 70s under partly sunny skies Thursday and mostly sunny skies Friday.
Thursday night will be the chilliest of the next stretch of days, with lows in the mid 30s to mid 40s so the Friday morning dog walk will need a couple layers to be donned. By Friday night, lows will sit down squarely into the 40s.
The weekend looks even cooler with highs generally in the 60-65º range under mostly cloudy skies, with a chance for rain most probably during the Saturday afternoon to early Sunday timeframe.
A lot of uncertainty still remains, as this rainfall continues to hold the potential for southwestward suppression by high pressure to our northeast, so I will continue to update as trends hopefully become more clear.
By Memorial Day Monday into Tuesday, fair weather redevelops across the region with highs in the 70-75º range.
Have a great day!
