COLD START, COLD TUES. WITH SUN FOR THE NEXT 3 DAYS WITH INCREASING TEMPS… THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND NIGHT SOUTHERLY GUSTS PICK UP, AND RAIN MOVES IN AFTER MIDNIGHT INTO FRIDAY AM...

Good morning folks, we’ve got a cold start out there with temps in the teens and low 20s, and we’re facing another cold day with daylight at about its lowest ebb. I definitely am noticing that this lack of light weighs on me more these days in my later middle age than they used to. I’m a musician, so I LOVED being out late, but now sober almost 17 years and older and it’s a different time in life. What I do know is that the Solstice is less than a week away, and light will be returning so that’s a good thing to look forward to.

As for our weather, we’ve got a trio of 3 partly to mostly sunny days that should be mostly dry, save for a low chance at some snow showers Wednesday night up in SVT and SWNH as a weak wave wafts through the region.

Otherwise, we have increasing temps to look forward to as opposed to 3-4 months in an unrelenting deep freeze.

Highs today will reach the upper 20s to low 30s with lows in the teens. Wednesday should push into the upper 30s to mid 40s, which will be noticeably milder, with lows near 20º. And by Thursday we’ll see temps rise well into the 40s.

Beyond that, uncertainty increases in terms of how much warmth can be generated by a strengthening southerly flow with high pressure to our southeast and an incoming sharp cold front to our west.

Those two features will siphon much moister and milder air from the Bahamas up into New England before the cold front sweeps it all out to sea on Friday, with colder air set to sweep our region once again from west to east.

We know that rain, heavy at times, will move in around or after midnight into the pre-dawn hours of Friday morning and last through the morning before changing to wet snow and then ending in the Berkshires and SVT by early afternoon. We also know that strong westerly winds are likely to gust 30-50mph behind the front into Friday night, which will also lead to some lake effect snow showers or upslope snow with light hilltown/mountain accumulations possible by Saturday morning.

What is quite uncertain is just how warm we’ll get Thursday night as that will determine whether or not we see some breezy conditions or strong southerly gusts to 50mph or more, with some isolated damage possible, so that’s what I’ll be watching most in the coming days, as that potential is about 60-72 hours out.

Beyond that, the weekend looks more seasonably cold with highs in the 30s to perhaps low 40s for a day on Sunday, and the potential also exists for a period of lighter snow Saturday night into Sunday, but I will parse that out for you as we get closer.

Have a great day!
