WINTER WEATHER ADVISORIES HAVE BEEN HOISTED FOR THE BERKSHIRES, SVT, SWNH, NORTHWEST CT AND WESTERN HAMPDEN COUNTY FOR ACCUMULATING SNOW, AS WELL AS FREEZING RAIN/DRIZZLE IN SPOTS

Good morning folks, temps are not as bad this early morning as originally expected given the overspreading of high to mid clouds over much of the region this morning. This is an indicator that snow is on the way tonight, and some folks will see freezing rain or freezing drizzle later this evening.

We’ll start off dry with clouds continuing to develop with highs reaching the upper 20s to low 30s, which will feel like an early Spring day given what we just endured!

We’re going to have a warm front and cold front combo move the region this later afternoon and tonight, and so we can expect warm frontal snow showers by mid to late afternoon, which shouldn’t last too long, but still will coat parts of our region.

Areas north of the Rt 2 corridor should see periods of snow showers or accumulating light to moderate snow starting late afternoon and perhaps lasting through the first part of tonight, whereas south of Rt. 2 we probably will see a lull around dinner time for a couple of hours.

However, it’s by the time we reach the 7-9pm timeframe that we should all fill back in with light to moderate snow, which may burst briefly heavy, especially north of the Pike where more snow is expected.

The snow that blooms this evening will be due to a southwesterly low level jet streak pushing moist air up and over the in-place cold dome of air, leftover by our Arctic intrusion.

But the southwest direction generally taps air from a milder source region, so this could loft some milder air into northwest CT (Litchfield and Hartford Counties) as well as the southern Berkshires east into the western Hampden County hilltowns where freezing rain may replace snow later tonight, with freezing drizzle also possible late tonight as lows drop into the low to mid 20s.

We should see a coating to an inch or so with some icing south of the Pike in the southern Berkshires, southern Hampden County down into northern CT, with 1-3” of snow north of the Pike in much of WMass, CMass, SVT and SWNH, with pockets of 2-5” of snow in the higher terrain.

In fact, with upslope snow showers continuing on SVT and far northern Berkshires, some areas of the southern Greens may see up to 6” or so by Thursday morning.

Despite upslope snow showers in SVT and far northwest MA Wednesday, most of the rest of us in the valley points south and east will see a partly to mostly sunny day with highs in the upper 20s to mid 30s, with lows in the teens as milder air works into the region finally.

In fact, the Thursday through Sunday period is looking quite pleasant, though a bit breezy behind our cold front for Wednesday and Thursday. Highs will be hang in the upper 20s to mid 30s for the late week and weekend period, with lows in the teens, so this is going to feel most welcome to many!

Beyond that, we may have a storm system to deal with by late Sunday night into Monday, but current trends are south and out to sea, but I update you as necessary going forward.

Have a great day!
