JANUARY THAW ARRIVES, BLACK ICE THIS MORNING, FREEZING FOG POTENTIAL PRE-DAWN FRIDAY MORNING, SHOWERS FRIDAY NIGHT, STEADIER/HEAVIER RAIN SATURDAY NIGHT, BRIEF ICING NORTH OF RT. 2
Good morning folks, we’ve got some areas of black ice out there this morning, as well as some patchy fog and/or drizzle in parts of the Berkshires and SVT, so watch for slick spots as you head out the door today.
High pressure is building in from our south, and light southerly flow will develop and help produce partly to mostly sunny skies with highs in the upper 30s to mid 40s today, so we’ll get more snowmelt, and then refreezing tonight with when temps fall back into the mid to upper 20s.
In addition, increased moisture from the south will push up dewpoints, and help to create patchy freezing fog which will cause additional slippery conditions in spots, along with patchy black ice overnight.
The freezing threat will completely lift by later Friday morning as southwest flow continues to strengthen ahead of an incoming warm front. Highs will reach the 45-50º range, and clouds will increase with some scattered showers by very late Friday afternoon and into the evening. Lows will drop into the mid to upper 30s.
On Saturday, any morning showers will end, and we’ll get into a mostly cloudy lull between systems with highs reaching the 40s as another storm center fires up over the Great Lakes region.
As this storm tracks northeast, a secondary low will form somewhere near the Gulf of Maine or perhaps even down near Cape Cod Bay, with both tracking northeast.
This will push rain back into the region Saturday evening, but it should be steadier and heavier, and may start as a period of freezing rain along and north of the Rt. 2 corridor, until milder air continues working in from the south, changing everybody to plain rain by Sunday morning.
Rain will shut off sometime by mid-day Sunday with highs reaching the 40s once again, but a cold front will sweep the region from west to east and drop our temps down into the 20s Sunday night as westerly winds pick up and gust 25-40mph through Monday.
This will cause Monday wind chills to sit down into the teens with highs ono=ly reaching the low to mid 30s under mostly sunny skies, so a brief return to Winter is expected.
Thereafter, another high pressure area develops to our south and helps pump milder highs in the 40s back into our region by the middle of next week with fair weather expected.
I hope you have a great day!
