COLD 24 HOURS AHEAD FOR LATE APRIL… SCATTERED MIXED SHOWERS LATER THIS AFTERNOON… QUITE COLD TONIGHT WITH LOWS IN THE 20S, SUNNIER TUESDAY… TEMPS MODERATE AS THE WEEK MOVES ALONG
Good morning folks, it is chilly for sure out there! Temps are in the upper 20s to low 30s for most of us, and it will be even colder tonight before we begin a slow rebound to seasonably mild temps to end this week after moving through a couple of minor scattered mixed shower events.
In other words, we can do this, I believe in you!
For today, the upper levels look a bit like late winter with an upper trough swinging east over the northeast U.S., which will bring a cold day for late April’s standards along with destabilizing the atmosphere by pushing very cold temps overhead.
This will allow for a partly sunny start followed by development of clouds as the day wears on, especially in the afternoon.
Highs will only reach the 40s for most of us, and some upper 30s are possible in far northwest MA into SVT.
At the same time, some of these convective clouds will give birth to scattered showers that (depending on elevation, temperature, and/or intensity), will drop snow, graupel or rain starting around early to mid-afternoon in SVT and the northern Berkshires, and spreading into much of the rest of WMass, SVT and SWNH into northern CMass through early evening.
Showers should weaken as they approach areas east, southeast and south of Springfield into the early evening before dissipating with the setting sun. Northwest winds will gust up to 25mph this afternoon.
Temps will be quite cold tonight, with lows down into the 20s, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a few upper teens readings in the peaks of SVT.
For Tuesday after our chilly start, high pressure builds overhead and calms any wind with still-chilly highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s under sunny skies with increasing clouds at night.
Lows will drop into the mid to upper 30s for most of us Tuesday night and as high pressure tracks southeast of New England and out to sea, a warm front will bring a few mixed showers into our region during the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday morning last into early Wednesday morning after sunrise.
Highs Wednesday should reach into the low to mid 50s under mostly cloudy skies with lows again in the 30s.
By late week, temps will come up into the mid 50s to low 60s range for high temps and we should see more in the way of sunshine to end the week.
Provided that our upper trough doesn’t depart Atlantic Canada too quickly, it may act as a deflector, and keep a Clipper type low diving southeast towards us this weekend off to our southwest, which would keep us dry with seasonable temps. I will update the weekend forecast we get closer, as it’s a bit uncertain at the moment.
Have a great day and check out the Nutshell and Celestials below!

YOUR NUTSHELL:
–An upper trough lifts east through New England today bringing unseasonable cold for 24 hours
–We start off partly sunny with clouds building this afternoon
–Highs mainly in the 40s, some upper 30s SVT and low 50s Springfield/Hartford
–Scattered mixed showers develop: high terrain snow, valley rain and/or graupel
–Northwest gust up to 25mph at times
–Shower activity dies out with setting sun, lows well into the 20s
–Tuesday high pressure moves overhead, calm wind, sunny, highs upper 40s to mid 50s
–Lows mid to upper 30s with a few mixed showers as a warm front moves in
–Any early morning Wednesday showers give way to mostly cloudy skies and highs in the low to mid 50s with lows in the 30s
–Late week warms up further with highs in the 50s to low 60s Thursday and Friday under partly sunny skies
–Our upper trough that brought cold today will still be over Atlantic Canada and may deflect a rain shield to our southwest for the weekend, so I will need more time to parse that out, but temps look to remain similar to the late week period
