YOUR WEEKLY WEATHER NUTSHELL
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
–Primary low pressure tracks northeast through Lake Huron today into western Quebec
–Secondary low pressure then develops and tracks northeast from Virginia through the WMass region overnight and into Sunday morning
–Our secondary southern system has plenty of moisture
–Clouds thicken today and highs only reach the upper 30s to mid 40s
–Southeast winds develop by afternoon, and will gust 20-40mph later today and overnight, slamming moisture into the WMass and SVT mountains, ringing moisture out efficiently
–Higher gusts will be felt in the higher terrain, lower gusts in the lower terrain with a temperature inversion set up
–As rain and mixed rain/snow moves into the region between 5-8pm, evaporative cooling will drop temps in the Berkshires, western hilltowns, southern Greens of VT and parts of northern CMass into SWNH above 1000 feet (eastern Franklin County, too)
–This will flip rain to either mix in those areas, or at higher elevations to all wet snow, which will fall heavily at times overnight
–The Pioneer Valley (mostly from Greenfield/Bernardston south) will see mostly rain down into northern CT and into southern CMass, but some mix is possible
–The combo of heavy wet snow and high wind gusts will cause scattered outages, mostly in southern VT, and a bit in northwest MA
–Coating to 2″: Southern Berkshires, northern Litchfield County, northern CMass, eastern Franklin County, western Hampden County, low terrain of SWNH
–2-5″: northern Berkshires, western Franklin, western Hampshire, eastern Windham County VT and high terrain of SWNH
–5-10″ in eastern Bennington and western Windham Counties in SVT, and possibly in parts of northern Cheshire County NH, with up to foot possible on the big ski slopes
–Precipitation quits by dawn tomorrow as the low rockets northeast and away from our region as the dry slot pulls through
–Winds swing around to the northwest and west and gust 25-45mph at times later Sunday with blustery conditions and highs in the 40s falling into the 20s for Sunday night
–In addition, the upper low will drift through the region Sunday afternoon and into Monday
–The lift from the upper low will combine with moisture off of the eastern Great Lakes to produce periods of scattered snow showers, mostly in the high terrain west of the I-91 corridor, with mixed rain/snow or just rain showers in the valley floor
–Additional accumulations are expected in the Berkshires, western hilltowns, SVT and Taconics from Sunday afternoon through Monday morning
–Blustery conditions will continue Sunday night into Monday with highs Monday only in the mid 30s to low 40s with snow showers on the wane, and winds too
–After a chilly Monday night with lows in the upper 20s and breezy conditions, we turn the corner on Tuesday
–The next episode of “The Mildening” will air at theatres near us Tuesday through Friday only, with increased sunshine and highs in the upper 40s to mid 50s
–Some showers are possible later Friday into Saturday
YOUR MORNING DISCUSSION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Good morning folks, I apologize for the lateness of this report as I had two major glitches that hit out of nowhere, so I am going to leave the Nutshell to do the work for me, but the bottom line is that we’ve got a stahm’a’comin’, with rain, sleet and snow, with some areas of far northwest MA and especially in the southern Green Mountains set up for a late-winter moderate to major snowstorm with wind and outages in spots, while us WMass valley dwellers down into southern Worcester County and northern CT should see mostly rain.
The snow will develop at elevation due to a loaded southern stream system with plenty of precip combining with evaporative cooling processes and a strong southeast wind slamming moisture up against the mountains, all of which will help produce enough dynamic cooling to produce accumulating wet snow.
In addition, as the storm leaves us by dawn tomorrow (turn those clocks forward an hour!) winds will then gust out of the northwest with vim AND vigor by afternoon, night and into Monday, with upslope and lake effect snow showers scattered about, aided by the broad lift from our upper low which will float through the region from west to east Sunday.
This will produce blowing snow, and additional snow accumulations in the high terrain west of the I-91 corridor in NW CT, WMass and SVT.
Have a great day and if you depend on my work each year, please chip in whatever is comfortable for you at the secure link below so I can continue through 2024… even $5 helps, thank you…

>>> BE KIND <<<
“Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There’s only one rule that I know of, babies: Goddamn it, you’ve got to be kind.”
