YOUR WEEKLY WEATHER NUTSHELL

–This has become a light to moderate snowfall from north to south
–Snow has begun in northern CT, which will see the highest snow totals today, with Torrington, CT in Litchfield County already seeing a fluffy inch on the ground at 5:30am
–Snow will fall light to moderately mainly south of the Route 2 corridor for several hours this morning, with scattered snow showers north of Rt. 2
–In SVT and SWNH,. many will see zero accumulation (though some upslope snow showers overnight with new cold air coming in will freshly coat some parts of SVT and the northern Berkshires)
–My latest snow totals (slightly down from last night) are posted in the discussion section below, but generally 1-4″ for much of WMass and CMass south of Route 2, with 3-7″ in northern CT and southernmost Worcester County including the city itself
–Any snow that falls does so this morning into early afternoon, then the storm pulls away from us by mid afternoon
–Northeast winds may gust up to 25mph at times
–Highs in the low to mid 30s, and lows in the low to mid 20s with wind turning to the west
–High pressure moves in on Wednesday and paired with departing low pressure, the pressure gradient will kick northwest winds up to 25-35mph at times with highs in the upper 20s to low 30s under mostly sunny skies
–Lows will dip to the teens with continued breezy conditions, and wind chills in the single digits at times
–Thursday starts off sunny with highs in the 30s, but we cloud up as a Clipper system likely brings some light snow Thursday night into early Friday. Lows are in the mid/upper 20s Thursday night
–Wind kicks up again in the wake of Lil’ Clippy for Friday, with gusty west winds up to 40mph possible with highs in the 30s
–More snow showers are possible Saturday
–Sunday is the pick of the weekend with partly sunny skies, and highs both days in the low 30s with lows in the teens to low 20s
–Fair weather should continue into early next week with seasonably cold temps

YOUR MORNING DISCUSSION

Good morning everybody, our further-south storm is delivering snow at 6am to southern MA and especially northern CT where 2.3″ fell in one hour in southern Hartford County in East Farmington Heights, CT.

I will start by showing you my new snow amounts as of this morning which are similar to last night, but adjusted slightly downward.

The reality is that theere will be a sharp gradient between haves and have-nots, with northern CT up into southernmost CMass being the haves with this system.

NEW SNOW AMOUNTS AS OF TUES MORNING
–Dustings to nothing north of Route 9 corridor in SVT and SWNH

–Coating to 2″ northern Berkshires, SVT/SWNH (along south of Rt. 9 corridor), Franklin County, northern Worcester County above Route 2.

–1-4″ central/southern Berkshires, Hampshire County, Worcester County from Rt. 2 down to the Pike, and Hampden County (upper range to south and east, lower range north and west in this zone).

–4-7″ northern CT and southern Worcester County from about Worcester south to the CT state line, however based on current trends, some parts of northern CT could exceed 7″, and this could also apply to the southern Worcester County in some spots

A winter storm is pushing east-northeast off of the Virginia coastline and will track south of The Benchmark, and as such deliver a true snowstorm for the I-95 corridor from Boston to NYC, which is rare these days.

Any snow that falls this morning (the “brunt” of this system) will wind down by early to mid afternoon.

Northeast winds should gust 15-25mph and highs will reach the low to mid 30s with lows in the low to mid 20s with some upslope snow showers in SVT and the Berkshires with fresh coatings possible by Wednesday morning.

High pressure moves in tomorrow, and brings sunshine and wind, with west to northwest winds gusting 25-35mph at times with highs in the upper 20s to low 30s, and lows in the teens with breezy conditions at night and wind chills in the single digits at times.

Thursday starts off sunny and ends cloudy, with highs in the low to mid 30s.

An Alberta Clipper system moves through the region at night, bringing light snowfall which could accumulate a couple of inches as it looks now.

A “Clipper” is just an old meteorological term that refers to moisture-starved, land-based Canadian waves that bring light snow through the region, they’re minor events, usually.

That runs through Thursday night into early Friday, then MORE wind and cold develops behind that system, with gusts 25-40mph Friday into the evening with more cold wind chills.

After a few more snow showers on Saturday, we should see a better day for Sunday with partly sunny skies and highs both days in the low 30s or so with lows in the teens.

Fair and seasonably cold weather continues into early next week.
