Western CT sees worsening conditions by this afternoon and especially this evening when air quality will take a nosedive with acrid, unhealthy air >>> MORNING DISCUSSION <<< Good morning folks, all I can say is hang in there today as more crappy smoke-filled air pushes into the region and/or is leftover from yesterday. There's no way to sugarcoat it. As long as this upper low now centered over Maine and Atlantic Canada continues to lollygag aimlessly to our northeast, while circulating counterclockwise it will drive smoke-filled air from the Quebec wildfires into the greater WMass region. This is an unusual air flow direction, as the warm season usually is advecting air from the west and southwest, so with time, this smoke should clear our region, anyway, but we do have another plume that will move into and through the region this late afternoon and tonight, so it's going to get worse before it gets better, unfortunately for us. Air Quality Alerts have been hoisted again for the region, with western CT getting into the crap plume by mid afternoon or so, and the rest of the WMass region south of the VT/NH state line by later afternoon and evening. Skies will be more cloudy north of Rt. 2, and mostly cloudy south of there, with partial sunshine possible in parts of northern CT. Any sunshine will be filtered, and even heavily so with haze. I expect there will be more than one otherworldly sunset shot taken, posted and bandied about the social mediasphere before sunset today. Highs will reach the 60s to low 70s with lows in the 40s to low 50s overnight as smoke pushes into the region. For Thursday through Saturday we'll still be under the influence of our slow-moving, cutoff upper low, and this will bring scattered showers for some of us each afternoon, with a much colder pool of air moving overhead Friday which will spark some thunderstorms. Highs will generally be in the 65-70º range with lows in the 40s to near 50º with mostly cloudy skies through the week, and partial sunshine possible by Saturday. Again, the hope is that by Thursday afternoon we're mostly clear of the worst effects of the wildfire smoke, but I will keep you updated. For Sunday the pick of the weekend arrives! We should enjoy mostly sunny skies with highs in the mid to upper 70s and only an isolated shower possible. However, by early next week yet another upper low will drop south out of Canada, but this time it will be positioned over the Great Lakes. This pushes a southwest wind towards us, which again should keep smoke out of New England for the most part. At the same time, as this low tracks east, it could spread some substantial rainfall in our direction along a frontal boundary, which means by Monday into Tuesday it could get quite wet here with highs either side of 70º and lows either side of 50º. Limit outdoor activities today, but especially so this late afternoon and evening/overnight, as air quality will become lousy again, and potentially a bit worse than yesterday.
