Western Mass Weather for January 12, 2022

7:00AM-WED: GUSTY SOUTHWEST WINDS USHER IN OUR LATEST EPISODE OF “THE MILDENING”, COMING TODAY TO A TOWN NEAR YOU AND LASTING THROUGH THURSDAY… ANOTHER COLD PLUNGE ARRIVES FRIDAY INTO THE WEEKEND, WITH FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT BEING THE CORE OF THE COLD… PLENTY OF FAIR WEATHER THROUGHOUT, UNTIL WE GET TO LATE SUNDAY NIGHT INTO MONDAY WHEN A MAJOR STORM IS STILL ON THE TABLE, AND WOULD LIKELY AT LEAST START AS SNOW, BUT UNCERTAINTY REMAINS…

Good morning folks, it was much colder late last night toward midnight, but temps have “warmed” up a bit since then, in some cases almost 20 degrees overnight! Milder air is on the way for a couple of days, but we’ve got more cold shots and storm potential to run through below, but first I’ve got a note from our local and delicious sponsor, #TandemBagelCo, with a new location in West Springfield, MA.

WEATHER BULLETIN:
–Good morning everybody, high pressure has scooted south of us, and it sending milder southwest flow into our region this A.M.
–Don’t get me wrong, it’s still plenty cold out there, with lows in the single digits in the Pioneer Valley, near 0º in the northwest hilltowns, and in the teens in the Berkshires, CMass, and northern CT
–This is because circulation around high pressure is clockwise, and with that high to our southeast, we’re on the warm side of its circulation
–There is a pressure gradient being created over us this morning, and with the warming of the surface after sunrise, southwest winds will develop and gust 25-35mph later this morning into the afternoon before slackening
–Highs will reach the upper 20s to mid 30s under mostly sunny skies
–A shortwave moves through tonight and will not do much more than move some clouds overhead, and produce a few snow showers after midnight, with lows in the low 20s or so
–For Thursday, a milder, partly sunny day develops with highs in the 35-40º range #PeakMildening
–Lows will drop again into the low 20s
–A powerful coastal storm will graze Cape Cod and parts of easternmost MA with rain and snow on Friday, but we’ll be spared of that and left with a mostly sunny but breezy day with highs in the upper 20s to mid 30s
–The departing bombing out low set to blast New Scotland will pull a cold front through the region, and temps will dive below zero once again Friday night with continued north winds gusting to 30mph, which will likely prompt more Wind Chill headlines
–Saturday is another episode of Hoth, the Star Wars ice planet, with highs only in the single digits, but at least it will be sunny
–Lows again will be below zero, so bundle!
–Sunday is the calm before the storm and also the pick of the weekend with sunny skies and highs in the low to mid 20s
–Sunday night into Monday is when our storm potential increases substantially
–For now, it looks like a low center will dive southeast out of Canada toward the Deep South, and then round the bend, and track up the east coast into New England
–There will be plenty of cold air around that IF the storm is allowed to track further east of us, we could be talking about a major snowstorm here with wind as well, and possible outages (depending on the storm track)
–However, we have to see how our Friday Nova Scotian low affects the streamflow, which will impact how incoming high pressure into Atlantic Canada is affected and positioned, which in turn will determine if said high pressure system will move east enough to allow our coastal storm to track over Nantucket, or if it’s more west and causing our storm to track right up the Hudson or Connecticut River Valleys which would be a snow to rain setup

Stay tuned for updates, and have a great day!
