Western Mass Weather for December 28, 2021

6:45AM-TUES: PATCHY FOG AND FREEZING DRIZZLE PATCHES EARLY THIS MORNING FOLLOWED BY MORE LIGHT SNOW/ICE OVERNIGHT TONIGHT WITH COATINGS POSSIBLE… LOUSY PATTERN CONTINUES… RAIN SHOWERS BY THURSDAY, AND AGAIN ON SATURDAY/NEW YEAR’S DAY, WITH POTENTIAL TO END AS SOME SNOW…

Good morning everybody, our deep trough over the western U.S. which is aiding and abetting major snowfall and cold out that way is also fostering the transmission of multiple weak disturbances around its southern flank and ejecting them east-northeast across the U.S. and through New England every 24-48 hours as of late. This means more light wintry mixes and rainy periods on the way for us, but before we deal with those details, I’ve got a note from our local and delicious sponsor, #TandemBagelCo, with a new location in West Springfield, MA.

WEATHER BULLETIN
–Good morning everybody, we had some periods of snow, freezing rain and freezing drizzle overnight, so watch for any slick spots this morning
–Patchy fog will last for a bit, and cause lowered visibilities in spots as well
–We’ll dry out as the morning wears on, and highs will eventually make it up to the upper 30s to low 40s with southwest flow and gusts up to 25mph expected
–Skies should be mostly cloudy, and then lucky us, another weak wintry mix disturbance will track into the region this evening, Hooray! Huzzah! Yahoo! Break out the booze! Let’s have a party! This is the best!

#SaidNoOneEverRegardingThisStinkPattern

–Once again, light snow, freezing rain and rain will track through the region overnight, with the steadiest precip in southern MA and northern CT
–Lows tonight will dip into the upper 20s to low 30s, and some new coatings are possible, so watch for slippery conditions in the morning
–For Wednesday, any morning mix ends, and we end up with another mostly cloudy day with highs in the 35-40º range, colder north, milder south
–Wednesday night yet ANOTHER system tracks toward the region, but this one looks milder
–Some light sleet or freezing rain may kick off the party late Wednesday night with lows near the freezing mark, but we should transition to plain rain showers sometime by mid-morning or so on Thursday with highs in the low 40s
–We may end with a few flakes Thursday night, with lows near freezing
–New Year’s Eve day looks drier and should be the pick of this week, actually
–Brief high pressure moves into the region, and gives us a partly sunny day with highs in the low to mid 40s, with clouds developing during New Year’s Eve, which looks dry at the moment
–However, after midnight, first snow showers move into the region ahead of what looks like a rainy New Year’s Day for our first hours of 2022
–Any snow showers will turn to rain by Saturday morning, and rain could fall heavily at times, as this system will more robust and accompanied by a mid-level trough moving toward the eastern U.S.
–This MAY be a pattern changing setup, or just a blip in the existing regime, so time will tell
–But it does look like after a mild weekend in the upper 30s to low 40s for highs, we turn colder on Monday, and it is during the times when cold is arriving or leaving when coastal storm potential is not too far away, so I will keep you updated about that Sunday night into Monday timeframe (and the rest of it, of course!)

Have a great day!
