Western Mass Weather for August 17, 2021

6:55A-TUES: SOUP TIME RETURNS TO THE WMASS REGION STARTING TOMORROW… A FEW SHOWERS POSSIBLE TODAY, BUT GENERALLY DRY WITH INCREASING CLOUDS… WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON INTO THURSDAY SEES HUMIDITY COME WAY UP AND FRED’S REMNANTS DROP DOWNPOURS AT TIMES OVER OUR REGION… FRIDAY IS A LULL BETWEEN FRED’S DEPARTURE AND AN INCOMING TROUGH WITH SOME SHOWERS AND MAYBE A THUNDERSTORM EACH WEEKEND DAY… WE’RE HUMID THROUGH EARLY NEXT WEEK, THEN A CRISPENING IS POSSIBLE BY WEDNESDAY…

Good morning everybody, I hope you slept well and ready for another day as homo sapiens embodied in the Cosmos. I’m getting ready to play in 3 acts tonight in the Northampton Arts Council’s annual fundraiser at the Pines Theatre in Look Park, Florence, MA and I am so excited to play super fun music with my friends for our community to help raise money for the city Arts Council. We’re rehearsed up and ready to rock, so I hope you can make it, as the weather looks like it should mostly cooperate!

QUICK STORY
–A few showers are possible today and tonight, but we should be mostly dry
–Humidity creeps in this evening, but arrives deeply tomorrow and Thursday as Fred’s remnants move through
–Showers and downpours will become more numerous especially Wednesday night into Thursday
–We get a lull on Friday with some partial sunshine, then the weekend should feature unsettled afternoon conditions at times with scattered showers and thunderstorms
–Humidity and shower potential lasts into early next week, after which a cold front should help dry things out by mid week

DISCUSSION
We’re on the western edge of high pressure to our east and this drying influence should keep us mostly dry during today and tonight.

However, we do have a plume of moisture tracking northeast into the region this morning well north of the Tropical Storm Fred which is down in northern Georgia and tracking north-northeast toward New England.

This should produce some scattered lighter showers across northwest CT, WMass and SVT this morning, with some areas staying dry.

Highs should reach the 75-80º range, and humidity will creep up with dewpoints moving into the low 60s or so as the day progresses. We’ll see some sunny breaks, but overall clouds will be on the increase today.

A shower or two is possible this evening, but again most activity should be relegated to the western hilltowns or the Berkshires and points north and west. Lows will be in the mid 60s.

For Wednesday, humidity will really surge back into the region with dewpoints well into the 60s to near 70º, and we should see showers and some downpours arriving by the middle of the day, and lasting in intermittent fashion through Wednesday night and into Thursday as tropical air overspreads our area with the approach and passage of Fred’s remnants (which won’t be the new name for my band, in case you were wondering).

Highs Wednesday will be in the upper 70s to low 80s with lows well into the 60s, and quite muggy. Thursday highs will be more in the 70s with lows again in the 60s. Expect mostly cloudy to cloudy skies both days.

The Friday to Sunday period looks to feature the departure of Fred, but an upper level trough over the Great Lakes will push east and send some disturbances through our flow, with scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms possible each day.

Expect partly sunny skies each day, with highs in the low to mid 80s and lows in the 60s to near 70º.

Monday could see a break in the action with more showers Tuesday before a cold front swings through and delivers us some crisper, drier air from Canada with a break from the humidity.
